Noisy 3.8 buick ultra motor

I am on my 3rd. buick supercharged motor (all different years) they all have motor knock under load, gas milage is good, no oil burning. put 60,000 klix on last one.anybody else have similar problem?

Sounds like a timing issue or not enough octane in the fuel

Only thought beside the computer controlled timing is the knock sensor.

Had a few of these come through the shop and found the majority needed timing chains replaced.

Are you using (or have you tried using) premium fuel in it?


Wife had a GM product years ago that I mistakenly put regular into ...... holy crap did that thing knock and clang IMMEDIATELY after pulling out of the gas station (she always ran premium in it). I headed straight for Canadian Tire, bought some sort of fuel treatment (can't remember what, I may have even bought two kinds and poured them both in biggrin), and the noise was gone.  I never made the mistake of putting regular fuel in it again smile

Do you mean 3rd engine in same car ? Might be a stupid question on my part ?

Sounds like pre-detonation to me, which is timing and plain crappy fuel they have these days.

I have an '04 GP (no Longer super-charged). My old '97 GP would kick its ass any time of the week.

Those 3.8's just keep running and passing etests, no matter how hard ya pound them. I love them.

When I said I was on my 3rd. 3.8 supercharged I meant 3 different years and cars 1993/1997/2005 all purchased with less than 150,000 km. ALLWAYS use shell 91 grade, never,never use ANY grade of Petrocan,my 97 was ruined the first and only time I filled up there,cost me almost 2,000.00 in repairs. as a point of interest I get 4.9 lit/100km. Sherlock.

 57.6 MPG WOW you must have a real light foot!!

Had a 97 Regal GS, and was pretty impressed with its performance.

When you drain the oil and change the filter, do you put oil back in the engine? biggrinbiggrin

 Oh, ummm, is that really bad thing or just not recommended ? If I strain my oil through a coffee filter, it should be good right ?

AS mentioned Timing chain tensioners wear out, slapping chain?
Also if it has a knock sensor check the torque, a loose one will require more bang to reduce timing. Torque tighter and it will be more sensitive.
Not S/C bearings/gear play?
Ya they are amazing engines. (considering the year of design) kicks jap ass, for the price and technology.

I buy (and have always bought) from whatever gas station is close and open (when I need fuel), including Petro, and have never ruined an engine due to my gas purchase.  As a matter of fact, I've never even heard of this before.  What's the story?

 57 MPG? engine ruined after one fill up at Petrocan ? I'm eagerly waiting for his reply.

What exactly was 'ruined' in these engines. Same stuff every time ?

Are you talking a bottom knock such as rod bearing or top end ping ?

To Chips,regarding bad gas at petrocan,a friend gave me a discount card for that brand and the first fill-up the car started to run rough the next day like it had water in fuel so dumped in small bottle of de icer,end of week still running ROUGH so filled up at same station,next day car would not even start,plugs were soaked with gas,cleaned them. still no start so pulled out fuel pres. regulator and it was plugged with sand.ended up replacing fuel pump, injectors fuel filter and blowing out lines etc.car then ran as before I used that station. weird thing is gas co. claims no body else had problems.They checked tanks at station about 3 weeks after I complained!  I think average joe has no idea why his car quits and when it does goes to garage and they fix problem without trying to find what caused problem. As to my gas mileage in 2014 put 6721 km. on buick and used 1578.054 lit.fuel  my calculations equal  4.259043 lit./100 km.   Sherlock.

Dude, you have an enemy that is giving you free fuel additives if that's the case.

Who's o'lady did you pick up ? You still haven't said what those 3 engines died of !

without a calculator 4.2/100=42/1000=294/7000 . Unless you missed some Zeros your somewhere north of 20/100

Thats brutal . Maybe you are washing the oil off the cylinder walls with gas cause its using enough to power a 7 L engine
