sometime ago when i was looking for a part, power top switch, for the 67 galaxie i had entered the vin # off my ontario ownership into a site for cross reference and the reply was that vin number doesn't exist. i knew what it was and i started snooping into it. the second digit on older fords is a letter, not a number, which denotes where the car was built and in my case it is a G which is chicago. the 5th digit is a letter also, not a number, which denotes the engine size and in my case it is suppose to be a Q for the 428 engine. when i first registered the car in ontario at trenton the letter Q had got dropped and replaced with the letter O and i didn't catch it until i was looking for the switch. WTF when i got into it there is no letter O engine size for fords, anyway. i asked a mechanic friend of mine for some sort of a letter with his license # on it to take to the mto to get it straightened out and he told me that i had to go to a ford dealer for a letter as they wouldn't recognize one from a mechanic. half assed luckily the guy at the dealership knew old cars, i had sold him a comet caliente earlier, so he knew the predicament i was in and he wrote the letter with no hassle. i had also got a marti report to go with it.
-i went to the mto yesterday to get it fixed and the lady more or less asked what the big deal was and when i told her that it probably meant a big difference in the value of the car so she understood the difference. she enters the right info into the system and it wouldn't take it so she calls the district mto office and about a 20 min wait later on the phone she re-enterted the info and it went. we had become palsey-walsey by this time and i asked her wtf and she told me there are no vin's anymore where they use the letter Q or the letter I due to this exact reason, the screw up. the ownership now has the letter Q on it.
-so guys when you get your ownership's changed into ontario make sure you check all the info before you leave the wicket as it can save a bunch of hassle doing it after the fact.
-just a heads up. Oh Yea-----HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

I went through the exact same sort of ordeal with a 69 Cutlass. VIN didn't match ownership by 1 letter. I know the VIN on the car never changed, so it was a ministry screw up. Guess who had to pay and go through hoops to to fix it.

Same thing happened to me. It was a screw up at the Ontario ministry. It cost me $50 for the "certified" appraiser to fill out the paperwork and nothing at the Service Ontario office.
Both my HenryJs have had vin issues. The 51 was missing the letter off the vin and I got a buddy with a car dealer license to type up a letter with the correct info. Yes the clerk has to call in and have someone there approve the change. My 53 from Alberta is registered by the body number and I got another dealer to type up a form with the correct info only to be told at the local DMV who called it in that I need a second letter head from by an ONT approved appraiser. In will try and scan the dmv info, as it also allows somebody from a car club to authenticate the vin #.
I had the Ford thing too "S" (400 cu in) had become a "5"
MTO made me get a letter from a dealership stating the 5 place was a letter not a number. It was good for the MTO.

In 1972 the "S" was a 400 cleveland small block torque monster. "M,Q,R" were for killer Clevelands 351,351CJ & 351SCJ(AKA Boss351)
71-73 are my favourite FORD years.

"Hey don't take that tone with me !" there was no tone implied henry, that post is year specific to my 67 is all. a very good friend of mine bought a new 71 g-t torino with the 429 in it back in the day. it was a very nice car, black on black, that would get up and dangle. they are worth a small fortune now as are the boss mustangs. when i picked up my 69 coronet in california some years ago there was a 71 g-t 429 4 spd in one of the guys shops that was a really nice original car. my buddy who was with me who is partial to fords dam near had a stroke looking at it. i swear if we didn't already have 2 cars on the trailer it would of come home with us, lol. he was asking 30 grand for it. i sometimes think i should give him a call to see if he still has it but then i take a cold shower and the thought goes away, lol. - here you go bud, a peace offing of sorts, lol. 1972
Anyone that can quote scriptures from the book of Henry is OK in my books.

it was taken that way, wink-wink. this thread is/was a spin-off of the "what is considered rare" thread of a bit ago. i knew about the Q being replaced with an O awhile ago looking for some parts but i figured it was an easy fix with just a letter from my mechanic buddy. i knew there wasn't a bunch of 428 xl verts and when that thread started i kinda got into the stats on it and figured i better get it straightened out now rather than later and thats when i found it wasn't as easy as i thought and probably been avoided if i had of checked the info standing at the counter the first time. -actually getting into the stats on the car has been somewhat of an eye opener so to speak. its not far off ready for paint and i had been thinking what color sort of thing until i got into the stats. being a one off car for paint and trim pretty much made that an easy choice and probably $$$ more for the job. i knew marti reports were the supposedly bible for fords as the govier is suppose to be for mopars but i never thought of getting one until i figured i will get one to help to fix the Q problem.
