Will the newer style vortec heads work on an older ( 1986  ) 350 ?

if you are talking '98 or so vortec heads then yes. Have to use the proper intake,,gaskets  and self aligning rocker arms.

And you can only use a cam up to about .450 lift unless you modify them. The retainers will hit the valve guides because they are huge.
