My 55 Chevy with SBC and 4 speed had no trans cross member, it just hung there. Never had an issue with it. Are you looking to use side mounts for the engine too?

my 57 has front motor mounts and side mounts on the bellhousing and Muncie hang too. I am going to install the 4 spd w/od that uses its own special bellhousing so need the tranny mount. I will likely fab up my own out of rec tubing unless I find a cross member . Simple to make.

Pretty easy to make one.......There was not factory one in 55-57s.

If you are going to do the rear tranny mounts with no mid mount, you should install engine side mounts. The long distance from the front engine mounts to the rear of the tranny may cause the bell housing to break.

I used one from a 77 Nova in my 57. Just had to add 90 degree angle brackets on the inner frame to support it. Correct width even!

I have the Danchuk side mount kit in mine. With the crossmember I used I can shim it to adjust the engine angle. Works great as its also notched/shaped for dual exhaust.
