I live in Clinton and have been waiting to get my truck in a shop since last August
anyone close to me ? I can trailer the truck
I bought a 1999 GMC short box last year Nice clean truck... painted in 2003-04 The truck was painted Viper red The clear cloat was peeling badly…..
I bought it, and replaced all the brakes, and a/c and looked for a painter
We have a local fellow who painted a friends Lemans... He does gorgeous work... mostly specializes in "old cars”…
In August, he said he could paint it in Nov.Dec for 3600 I said great… I took it apart in Nov….
Its a truck dissembled (by me) and not needing re-assembly (I will do) Its a "closed door" sand and paint... nothing under hood or between doors or box
Here it is almost April, and he booked in a Corvette of a friend of my wives and its not done :(
I check at 3 area Clinton body shops all too busy
I am either finding a painter or “parting it out” Help

i got a new roller and brush....good luck in your search carl
and people say a good mechanic is hard to find lol
I am sick about this I waited from Aug to Nov and he blows me off I booked a hood to be painted 2 weeks ago on my white caravan still no call (Clinton Auto)
I'm leaving right now to show Clinton Auto Body my wifes Suburban with a scrape in it
(gives me a change to ask about red truck and the hood on the van
My boss's painter was in today I asked if he could paint my truck ? nope too busy with dealership work......
If i could find a painter I would have owned your car (still want it- wanna trade for a truck)
that why I getting out of the hobby every body either don t want to see you or if they do the price goes up , if you get a low price you got to wait on the list
I started off my full time working life as a body man, and I can tell you, that straight up re-paints are a pain, everybody wants it done now and for nothing, but the fact of the matter is, that on any re-paint, there are always hidden problems, that the customer almost always says he won't pay for. That is why body shops don't want to do it anymore... Collision repair is where the money is, and we deal with insurance companies, not anal customers.
Like in your post, you said in August he quoted you to start in Nov-Dec...You only tore it apart in Nov...Why wait? And why even take it apart yourself?
I know if it was me and someone showed up with a truck that was ripped apart, and said to re-paint it doors closed, as is, I wouldn't even touch it. Why? Because you will bitch about how the 10 year old paint in the jams doesn't match the new, and then god forbid you damage the paint when you re-assemble it, surely it'll be the body shops mistake...
IDK...In my opinion, re-paints just aren't worth it unless the customer has a year, and it is for a show car...

If you rely on others to do your stuff, it's not much of a hobby. Buy a spray gun and teach yourself how to do it.

I agree with your comments, on most body shop customers actions and expectations
I am 67... worked in retail automotive for 45 years (still work part time) I have owned almost a hundred cars and am not a newbie
I figured if it was painted last fall, it would still sit in my heated garage all winter He said he was busy until Nov and would need the truck for 2 weeks
The truck was "built in 2002-3 and was driven 1700km until last May The "clear coat" bubbled on 2 of the sellers trucks (both painted in the same shop by the same painter..
I did not "rip" the truck apart.. I removed all the parts and trim very carefully, and bagged and tagged every part...
The paint under the hood and inside doors is Perfect... I do know, that I will be responsible for color match and I can re-assemble it as well as any body shop staff
Good news I spoke to Robert at Clinton Auto Body, and explained my stress... He will paint it as soon as weather warms up and will do most of it himself...
So I agree that a full re-paint is a PIA but my circumstances are a little different and boy am I glad, I don't do retail Carl
why does it take 2 weeks to prepare and paint a truck , back in the 60 s my dad own a body shop and me and my brother use to sand and mask the cars and we were sanding hand I guaranty you it don t take 8 hours or 2 weeks to get a truck sanded otherwise my dad would kid my butt for sure

Back in the 60's paint quality was crap and so were the OEM paint jobs, and that's why a couple kids could sand a car with 320 in the morning and paint it in an afternoon. You can still do that today, but you wont like the results because we're so used to seeing near perfect paint jobs on most cars nowadays. To paint a car properly does take a couple weeks, but most of that time is spent waiting for primers to cure properly. Gone are the days of priming in the morning with lacquer primer, sanding at noon and painting in the afternoon.

Well the car in my avatar was painted in Florida at a quick and cheap paint job iguess for crappy stuff it still don t look bad for my taste anyway no clear coat that peels off like those 4000.00 paint jobs of today
The car in my avatar is/was a flordia car which still needed every thing replaced /rebuilt or repaired.. Have all the pictures of the complete Rotisserie restoration of such car the total price including suspension rebuild was 15'000 inclusive. Might start a thread of cars done through out the years, not to boast just to show all how far life can take us...

Yes it's 72 duster....Mini tubbed with full back seat.. Big money =ya suppose=all though a lot of time was spent making the body gaps all line up like a Ferrari as the customer request. Most of the body panels were junk an needed lots of work/repair. The underside is as shiney as the top.. Most of the cars done back in 80-90's time only paid roughly 5k The easiest way is too make sure the customer has a visa/line of credit so there's no hold up's during the job. When the car is done it goes right back to its rightful owner an then the owner just makes monthly payments to the card/line of credit Makes getting the work done painless for all. 15k on a credit card these days is peanutz we use to carry the customer on our credit/line of 25k..we no longer do such an no longer have a credit card due to being jammed a few times an the **** show that entailed ... Got to feed the grand kids you know...The paint product's alone aint cheap....

We can still do cars for 1500-2500 however the customer is signing a warranty disclaimer....
If the customer wants a every day driver job no problem, however the quality suffers due to time an cheaper products that get used..
I;e Lacquer flash primers an enamel/single stage Urethane..
Will do in time...
New here still try n to figure out the site...
Whats the easiest way to up load pics to this thread or start a new???
Ya jus cant know everything.....lol
