I live in Port Colborne. 15 minutes away from Fort Erie.
It's a little depressed, the hospital closed down, and there's lots of shops that have closed, but I hear it's not bad to live there as long as you do your research on the neighborhood first. Every city has it's bad part of town, just be smart about it.
Port Colborne is not bad at all, just stay east of the canal or north of the train tracks.
Hope this helps you!

If your a member on CR Johnnybgood lives in fort erie he has a thread open in general topics moving a garage. Just jump into his thread because Pm's don't work on CR
Just stay a few hundred feet back from the water on Lake Erie, but otherwise flooding is not usually an issue. Mostly snow and ice in the winter and bad ice in the summer.
I live less than 500m from Lake Erie. It's never been a problem.

I lived in Fort Erie for 15 years on Dominion Rd. and loved it there. When Dirty Dalton closed the hospital we moved because my wife has a heart condition and we needed to be closer to a hospital . There is a plan in the works to build a new hospital on the outskirts of Niagara Falls and it would be about 10 minutes from Fort Erie. The new palace they built in St. Catharines was about 45 minutes away from the Fort. As far as flooding goes the Thunder Bay area and Crescent park seemed to be the worst places and not so much because of the lake but the sewer and drainage systems. I had a flood at my place on Dominion Rd. and it was several years ago when we had that severs rainstorm on Boxing Day and my sump pump quit , other than that no problems. I live in Niagara Falls now but still miss Fort Erie. Lots of rodders there and some good car shows and cruise nights. House prices are good there but have been rising because of the Speedway being built and some major development at the racetrack.
We've lived in Vineland almost 60 years. I volunteer with Family and Children's services and as a result travel all over this part of Ontario daily. I've told my kids if they want to live somewhere other than here to look along Lake Erie from Sugar Loaf to Wheatley. Lots of very nice places and you don't have to battle the traffic from Burlington north to wherever you were headed. I strongly believe property values in Pt Colborne / Fort Erie are going to rebound in a big way, just look at some of the cottages that are being renovated into lakeside mansions.
Living in Niagara Falls, has its benefits, Fort Erie is similar. there is a small town attitude, but all the amenities are within a short ride. There are many cruise nights, especially once you get a "Nexus" card and can be a border hopper without waiting in lines........ Within half an hour is all of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, which has a new arena complex and lots of enternainment, Brock University has concerts, as do a many other places. Lots of tribute bands and theaters within reach. For example the wife and I went to Buffalo University to see Brian Setzer and his Stray Cats Christmas show, and all within 45 minutes of my house. There are quite a few good restaurants, near Fort Erie, but not many in Fort Erie. Port Colborne has a downtown core which is very artsy and compares to the Beaches area in T.O. but on a smaller scale. Like said before stay a bit back from the lake, as in winter it does push ice and water inland a bit. The Niagara River front is safe as the houses are well back and across the parkway. But the price and taxes are also higher there. The Niagara Parkway is a great drive all year, a bit cooler by the water in summer, and a national park for its entire length lake to lake. The area of Wainfleet , west of Fort Erie, has always been a bit cheaper to buy, but has even less amenities. But if you want a rural farm like setting it is a good choice. One thing you might try is to come down and grab a hotel room before the summer rates arrive. Spend a few days cruising around and get a feel for the area. If you are down this way, pm me first and we can show you around..........
Oh, and my daughter lives in Scarborough across the street from Rouge Valley medical centre. so I can understand your desire to get out.............. Davy J
