Last night at the show on the 115 a rat rod there would have looked better in a scrap yard. The one that had 39 on the doors. Bungee straps holding down the hood and hood pins holding the wheel nuts. But the worst part was I could see the white cords in the cracks of the tires.

That's the one I was talking about with the "Cracked" tires!!!!  Guess he didn't burn them off & still driving on them??? That's what paints us all with the 'BAD" brush

 Agreed!! Pete

Time to educate at the shows ...How do you do such without insult? is the key.

I thought that was part of S.E.M.A's mandate?

Some thoughts for a Sunday . I assumed MOE,MTO and the local cops were the only ones I had to watch out for but after reading some of this crap I guess I should be careful that the guy next to me at the show might just be rating me out on some police fink line. I thought this was a hotrod site . No wonder the kids don't want any part of it. Sounds to me like a lot of you should just park your perfect so called hotrods and buy an antique or buy a new nice safe mini van and get out of the hobby. Hotrodding is building lowbuuk, fast and loud, obnoxious, piss off the establishment, cars and trucks. Even the choppers today aren't original . Choppers now are factory stuff ,or a bunch of off the shelf same as everyone else so called custom accessories. Wow the hotrod sceen has changed. Reminds me of the 80s and the don't call it a hot rod because it would be a bad immige, call it a street sod and then joe public will love me. If you want love buy a squeeker or some sports car. Oh ya if you wish to informe me how crappy or unsafe you think my car is , by all means tell me to my face and don;t use the fink phone line, but don;t be surprised at my reaction. Ed

First thing you need to lose the attitude that all cars that are well built are high dollar, because that's not the case. If I see a car that's unsafe, I will point it out to the owner's face whether it's you or anyone else. Instead of taking offence, maybe you should listen and make the necessary repairs so that you're not going to hurt someone, or worse, one of my Kids ! If you want to drive a car that looks like a POS, that's OK, but you have an obligation to make sure that the brakes and tires are perfect because it's my Family's life that's on the line. If you can't afford to at least meet these simple items, then maybe you should get rid of the car and sell it to someone that can. Canadian tire always has a sale on bicycles this year, BTW .

If you didn;t have all of the fancy equipment to "build it right " it would be highdollar. So maybe you should take a look around at the shop costs and fancy parts costs. Really should take a look at what your perfect cars would actually cost someone like me . Oh but I guess its only a hobby for people with milling machines, computer operated this and that and every kind of welding machine going. Beginning to realy understand where this site is heading. Gawd I miss the old Rat Rodders site. Ed

Since when did owning a hot rod give you permission to be a knob? Hot rodding is not all about low buck crap being driven by idiots.

Hot rodding is about creating or modifying our personal choice of vehicle, car , truck, bike etc.

We gather at shows to exchange thoughts, ideas and see others creations.

I don't need the hobby I enjoy (building way more showing) ruined because someone thinks it's their prerogative to drive an unsafe piece of crap that endangers me, my family and friends.

I have told people about unsafe things on their vehicles, it's usually met with indifference but I will continue to do so.

Putting on new tires, flex lines, pads and rotors has nothing to do with milling machines and computers. The 60's are over, and so are the days of driving around something that was slapped together with pieces from the wrecking yard. When was the last time you checked your brakes? Do you even know how old your tires are? Why don't you post a picture of the date code of your tires (located beside the DOT stamp). If everyone did a bit of due diligence and made sure their cars were safe, then maybe we wouldn't be talking about all these legal issues we're facing.

I spent the wknd. in Athens Ont, & attended a Show in Verona on Sunday. Talked to 2 OPP officers at show, said they had no interest in "hassling" the old car guys, & laughed when a 68 Barracuda came in with the headers "uncorked" Seems different areas of the province get different treatment?? Nobody from that area or Ottawa area has ever heard of the MOE checking for emissions, or being stopped by MTO for safety check, just doesn't happen!!! WTF, should be equal across the province, but I'll vote for their area rules, LEAVE US ALONE!!!! in GTA

this is the kind of crap on the roads that is creating the problem for all of us.

Pete,

According to this site, the SMOG patrol did a blitz in Ottawa as well.  Sounds like they focused on Camaro's and other GM products though so thats ok?

All,

After all the dust settles, I think you all know where I stand on the issue of safety.  If your car does not meet the standards either leave it at home or trailer it to the shows.  With that said, I deal mostly with muscle cars, not true Hot Rods so its probably easier for me to comply???  I read a really thought provoking comment on another site that I think is worth sharing.  I hope the author won't mind.  He points out that vehicle owners are responsible for maintaining the vehicles safety but we need mandatory "checks" for emissions in Ontario.  Its part of a much larger article which stated that 1% of vehicle accidents involve mechanical defects.

So they say we are responsible for maintaining a safe vehicle, but they don't trust us for emissions. that being said. modifications from manufactured cars, should be inspected. the manufacturer spends BILLIONS designing them for safety, meeting rigorous criteria, and extreme mods pretty much void all testing.

That write up is from 2009. Anything more recent?

I think for once we all agree. If you have a modified vehicle, make sure it's safe especially the items that affect others on the road. As far as the emission cash grab, if you have a car that had emission controls on it, you know the law and they have to be on there. If the MOE nails you, I won't shed a tear because you knew the rules. I don't agree with it because most of the stuff they choked the cars with in the 70's didn't work very well when it was new, and 40 years later it will be difficult if not impossible to have all components in working order. We are such a small percentage anyway that going after us is just a cash grab, but the law is the law.
If we don't want to get pooled in with the Guys that are ruining the hobby for us, then we should point it out to them if they have blatant safety issues because it affects us all.

Modified vehicle blitz held in Cobourg over night

Joint Forces Enforcement Team initiative resulted in 11 traffic stops and nine inspections

Northumberland News

COBOURG -- Nine motor vehicles were inspected in Cobourg during an overnight blitz, which focused on vehicles that appeared to have been modified from the original manufacturers’ specifications.

On Aug. 10 between 8 p.m. and midnight, the Joint Forces Enforcement Team made 11 traffic stops which resulted in nine inspections by the Ministry of Environment of motor vehicle safety equipment.

A total of 15 provincial notices were issued for offences contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, Environmental Protection Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

Among the charges were notices for defective brakes, covered headlights, improper mufflers, more than four lighted headlights, improper tires, expired validation, seat-belt offences, fail to stop at red light and fail to surrender insurance cards.

One motor vehicle was placed ‘out of service’ and another deemed as ‘cease operation.’

The initiative of the joint team, which consisted of members of the Cobourg Police Service, Northumberland OPP Traffic Unit and Ministry of Environment, was consistent with the strategic business plan of the Cobourg Police Service, and as set out in media releases that were sent out previously, the service said.

The police service said it is determined to make community roadways as safe as possible for all users.

Through enforcement and education, police said they are regularly addressing concerns that are brought by members of the public and officers as part of their day-to-day activities.
