Fake parts destroyed as concerns grow

SKF recently destroyed 1 million euros worth of fake parts in Greece after court battle that started in 2009.

And you thought handbags and sunglasses were the only knockoffs you might find in your neighbor’s house.

Turns out, ball bearings are also quite popular. So popular, in fact, that manufacturer SKF recently destroyed 1 million euros (about CAD$1.4 million) worth of bearing that were deemed to be fake.

The company had been entrenched in a legal battle for about eight years against a dealer of counterfeit bearings and other goods in Greece. Fifteen tons of fake bearing were seized in a raid of a company “with whom SKF had no business relationship during these years,” the company said.

The fake bearings were destroyed in a metal recycling facility on Greece.

The company selling the fake parts passed them off as the real thing, SKF said. “Instead of getting the premium quality product they thought they were purchasing, the customers ended up with products of unpredictable quality and performance.”

“We will continue to fight the problem of counterfeit products and importers in Greece,” said Rania Patsiopoulos, managing director of SKF Hellas in Greece. “This is vital for us in order to protect our customers and their business as well as the reputation of the SKF brand.”

Counterfeit claims have picked up recently. Hyundai in the U.S. recently launched an ad campaign to highlight the dangers of choosing counterfeit parts. In January, Australia’s Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries said over half a million counterfeit car parts were found in the raid of a warehouse in Al Ain, the second largest city in Abu Dhabi.

There, 21 truckloads of parts were discovered, bearing the logos of 15 carmakers with a value of over AUD$5.4 million (roughly the same value Canadian). The FCAI said these would be destroyed.

“Through our investigations over the last 25 years, we have increasingly seen spare parts for the major car brands being imported into Australia from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other parts of the UAE,” said Craig Douglas, director of Nationwide Research Group in Australia. “Our investigations have revealed that some of these parts are fake. This recent seizure of fake parts suggests the problem is on the rise and Australian consumers should be vigilant.”

Customers with the fake good will be the ones hurt most, and technicians who install the parts will also suffer, SKF said. The company shared a story of an anonymous customer who bought bearing from an unauthorized supplier. “Their failure was a fact after only a few months, while the expected service life was several years. We faced costly downtime and broken promises to our customers. All this could have been avoided, by more awareness and caution in our sourcing.”

Like those fake handbags, it’s hard to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not just by looking at them.

“Counterfeiters are more sophisticated than ever,” said Tony Weber, chief executive of Australia’s FCAI. “These inferior copies are so close in appearance to the originals that even professionals can have difficulty telling them apart until they test their actual performance.”

So what are we supposed to look for. With counterfeit bills at least the cops can give you a few things to
look for. This article really doesn't give much to go on. You have to wonder about some of the online venders and why there stuff is so cheap. We have had some real crap from Rock Auto lately. Electrical solonoids that just go up in smoke and a master cylinder that needed a lot of persuasion to seat properly. Ed

We carry SKF bearings at the store that I deliver for. they come with a lifetime warranty. I have not noticed any increase in the warranty claims lately, so I dont think any of those fakes got to us.
They also have the "white box" cheaper bearings. They have a shorter warranty (6 months I think)....We sell very few of them, but I have noticed that they have changed the brand of them that they are getting. Our sales guys dont push the white box stuff, but some people buy them.

Same thing with the cheaper brake rotors and pads......most people go for the better quality.

How about complete cars now?

The Chinese judge dismissed the lawsuit. Who woulda thunk?

I find that Princess Autos prices are not the deal that the American guys claim at Harbor Freight........They used to be much cheaper than they are now. CTC and TSC, same thing. Maybe its our crappy dollar?

Has nothing to do with the dollar.
We accept it, so the gouging continues.

Even products made here are up to half the cost down there.

My question is this, given most parts stores offer 3 different prices on brake shoes. If we go for the most expensive how do we know if there really is any difference. I read something awhile ago about Princess Auto and a famous name, selling what turned out to be the same ratchet for vastly different prices just because one had a famous name. Now the question becomes as PA upped the quatity or has the famous name lowered theres. Ed

In some cases the parts are the same and what you are paying for is extra warranty.

Yes it is a shame that the government has to step it to regulate things but I thought that was what our consumer watch dog was for??

Went to the US this past weekend. Looking at plazma cutters, the price tag read the same as in Canada except here it is Canadian dollars, 35% less. Looked at heavy shirts/jackets to wear for welding, the cheapest was $69US, bought one today at Marks for $50. The deals are disappearing in the US.

Well I think you guys are being altogether too tough on Princess Auto with respect to their quality.  Just today, I scooped up a pair of Sabrico Thermal Socks for an attractive price of $3.49 for two pairs.  A $6.00 savings!  The wife looked over the package and pointed out that the opportunity for R&D on Thermal Socks may be somewhat limited by the Made in Pakistan label.  I however was seduced by allure of a good deal and put them on after work anticipating a night of toasty feet in the shop.  I'll probably never know if they are any good or not as they seem to be giving off a strong oily smell, similar to Sea Foam penetrating oil.  I have decided to delay my trip to the shop so that I can wait until the wife goes for a bath so I can quietly sneak into the laundry room and get some normal socks.  These misshapen things suck!

First it was a post about shirts, then a post about socks. If the next one is about underware I think I have found the elusive Barrie Fleamarket web page. Ed

 Yes Sir!!!!!!

Used too do the big flea every year !

Till it got real stupid with non-automotive CRAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

Never mind the lot rent an the low life that burnt plastic lawn chairs ...[an got punched out by me for doing so!.]

No body likes drunk clowns burning lawn plastic at a crowded function

Or the clowns that run their generators all nite gassing ya out.

As for the bearing content of this thread..I always pick out the grease seal an repack the bearings ....never had any issues after doing so...

In fact when doing brakes on my own rig the hub bearings are part of my maintenance (nothing worst then seized hub bearing bolts {never mind the tapered heads right from the factory)

Repack an Grease these bugger bearing twice a year.Never a issue.
