Finding a transmission model
Permalink

Hi,

I'm a new owner of  1951 Packard 400, which has  1976 Dodge 440 engine. I found there is a leak from transmission pan and I'm not sure what type of transmission is there in order to get a new gasket.

The car still have the column shift and it is automatic.

Any help?

thanks in advance.

Backing up what Petebil said, if it's a three speed trans, I don't think it can be anything but a 727 unless someone has used or made an adapter to join the 440 to something else (the chances of which are next to nothing if not nothing itself).

Thanks guys,

couple of questions to finish the topic :)

1) what type of transmission oil I need to fill up?
2) Oil Capacity?
3) Is there any filter involved?

Thank you all.

 1) Dextron 3 or 6

 2) 5 quarts

 3) you can get a filter from NAPA and it will come with 2 pan gaskets. One gasket is for a 904 trans, so throw it out. https://www.napacanada.com/en/p/ATF17957

Short story here ... personal experience.

Wife and I were out doing errands and stopped in at Napa (Pickering) for a gasket/filter kit for her basic GM trans (either a TH350 or 200R4, forget which as this was a couple of years ago). She goes in alone because a family member used to work there and my wife still knew a couple of the employees. She returns to the car with the filter. I found out at this point that they had charged her $70 for the kit (I couldn't believe the price because kits like these had always been WAY cheaper when I bought them from Canadian Tire).  We immediately drove up Brock road to the Pickering Canadian Tire and ... sure enough, paid $20 for a gasket/filter kit.  At this point we headed right back to Napa to return our earlier purchase.

Only reason we went to Napa in the first place was because she was interested in seeing the people she knew there and only reason I waited in the car was because I didn't want to get stuck standing around while she chatted, I can at least listen to the radio in the car.

Earlier (not even the same year) at this same Napa, being coached by the paint salesperson that my wife knew, I was preparing to paint a car part (a hood) for my first time using true automotive paint.  I was sold etching primer for use on a fiberglass hood (they were made fully aware that the hood was fiberglass and I was unaware of the specifics of what supplies I truly needed since this was my first time, so I took their advice).  I have since found out that etching primer is only for STEEL not fiberglass so I was sold an extra primer that I did not need (first with etch prime they sold me, top that with regular primer I was sold, then finish with single stage colour coat).  It's always good business to sell people stuff they really do not need isn't it?

Many, MANY years ago I bought (from a different Napa/UAP in Toronto) a brass fitting for a transmission cooler line.  Cost me $7+ ... turns out the same fitting was available at Canadian Tire for under $2.

Needless to say, Napa is an absolute last resort for me (actually, I shouldn't even call it a "last resort" as I have no intention of ever going back) ... your results may vary.

These aren't the old "I heard from someone else that Napa is a rip-off", these are my own personal experiences ... just saying.

Why would you ask someone behind the counter to supply you the proper materials especially when it comes to automotive paint ? He was probably flipping burgers two weeks prior and most likely has no clue as to what you need. Hope it was a lesson learned.
NAPA is not anymore a ripoff than anywhere else. The consumer needs to be educated on what they are buying. I can guarantee you that the fitting at CTC was not the same quality/material if there's that much difference in price. Did you know that wrenches from the Snap-On truck cost 10 times as much as the ones from CTC ? I'll let you figure out why.

Ok, here goes ... regarding the paint.  I assumed that since Napa is an auto specific store (as opposed to Canadian Tire for example) they would employ qualified/trained people for their paint shop (specifically since there is so much involved in paints, primers, clears etc).  Since this happened before I had internet access, I felt it made sense at the time (in my case) to rely on the advice of their paint shop employee as I had zero experience with true automotive paint up to that point.  The hood did turn out well (after wet-sanding ... it was sprayed in my home garage) with the etching primer causing no problems but the gist of it is I was sold a product I did not need for my application and paint products ain't cheap.

As for the fittings being of better quality from Napa.  Maybe or should I say "probably" but I have used nothing but Canadian Tire fittings since with zero failures (I'm not building a rocket ship here smile).  The Napa fitting story happened probably 30 years ago.

As for Snap-On tools ... I own a few only because I've been given them but I don't buy them as I find the Canadian Tire lifetime warrantied tools work just fine for my purpose ... home shop.  For me, ten times the cost would never give me ten times the value in my instance.

As for the quality difference of transmission filters ... the Canadian Tire filter kit worked just fine as we never did have a transmission failure in that car or any of our other cars that I installed a Canadian Tire filter kit in so there is no way to tell how much better the brutally expensive kit works over the cheap one.  The Napa kit was damn near FOUR times the cost ... that, to me, IS a rip-off.

My sister had her original starter motor fail on her Ford Taurus.  Priced one out at Canadian Tire for WELL over $200 (I just assumed Napa would be more than that since I don't qualify for their special "jobber" rate plus I had sworn off Napa at that point).  I ended up buying one directly from a rebuilder for something like $60 and no tax.  It lasted the rest of my sisters ownership of her car.  What I'm saying is that paying high prices doesn't necessarily mean better quality and, depending on the intended application, cheaper stuff can work perfectly.  As an aside, bearings (roller) are NOT something I like to save money on as the cheaper ones can be absolute garbage right out of the box ... trans filter?  I'll take the cheap one thanks  biggrin

I am not saying a person shouldn't shop at Napa, just saying I won't and why.  A person can only "take it up the tailpipe" so many times biggrinwinkbiggrinwinkbiggrinwinkbiggrin

Edit ... sorry for dragging your post so far off topic.  More than happy to remove this if you would like me to.

5 quarts may not be enough IF you also need to fill the torque converter

I seem to remember my buddy's 727 in his duster took an easy 7-8 the night we put the trans in as I remember searching gas stations in the area at 2-3 am looking to get enough trans fluid to go home and top it up all the way so he could go home - I even ran into the other mopar guy from the neighbourhood at one gas station - he confirmed we were still needing to get the converter to fill up

so try the 5 , run it a little to pump the fluid around and check it again
preferably while crappy tire is still open lol

Thanks DJD, I just send a PM.

Pete Moss, don't worry about dragging the topic, arguments and comments are welcome until they are not hurting others. Thanks for sharing your personal experiences.
