any chance you might have a pic of the worst plate you've restored??

I have a set of 1929 ontario plates but they're badly crusty around the edges and some of the edge is missing in spots

redoing one of the set might be a nice idea so I have a "before and after" - or some sort of measurement of time passing (?)

bought them back in 2015 - as both my parents were born in '29 and both passed in '15

a tid bit to this topic is that not all yom plates can be registered for what ever reason. when i was looking for 1950 plates for the truck i found them easy enough but a couple of pair couldn't be registered. before putting out the money to buy the plates i recommend that you check with the m.o.t. to verify they can be registered. for sale, 1 pair 1950 plates for wall art, if i can find them.   lol

How can I get a year of manufacture licence plate?
Overview
If you have an original licence plate from the year your vehicle was manufactured, and want to use it, you need to have the plate reviewed by the ministry to certify it is a real plate and registered as a year of manufacture licence plate.

For example, you can attach an original plate issued in 1959 to a vehicle manufactured in 1959.

Eligibility
Vehicle requirements
You can attach year of manufacture plates to a vehicle if it:

weighs under 3,000 kg
is a passenger and light commercial vehicle from 1973 and earlier
is a motorcycle from 1975 and earlier
is a historic vehicle
is at least 30 years old
is not substantially changed or modified from its original manufactured condition
Plate requirements
The plate must be:

manufactured in Ontario
from the same year as the vehicle
The plate will be compared to an original plate from the same year to make sure that the requested plate has the same material used, colour scheme, layout and numbering sequence.

How to apply
You need to:

call 416-235-2999 or 1-800-387-3445 (toll free) to check the availability of the plate's letter and number combination
once you confirm that the plate is available, the plate must be reviewed to certify it is a real plate. Send both licence plates, the original vehicle registration permit, and payment to:
ServiceOntario
Kingston Production & Verification Services
Products and Services Office
P.O. Box 9700
Kingston, Ontario
K7L 5N2

It is recommended that you send the plates and vehicle registration via courier or registered mail. The ministry is not responsible for plates lost or damaged in the mail.

Cost
$251.65

there you go chris and thanks for the info. besides the physical aspect of the plates passing inspection why are some plates able to be registered and others not? my guess on it is that way back in the day when you took a car to the wreckers it was a big deal to have the ownership with it which info would of been passed on to the government, likely with the ownership, and taken from the system making the plate usable. the cars and their respective plates that didn't go through the system as gone are still registered to the last owner. i know when a buddy of mine bought a 40 coupe with no ownership, just a receipt from the guy, and he couldn't get an ownership to his name as it was never shown to be taken from the system. using the plate number that was on the car he traced it back to someone north of brockville and one of his family signed something that it was all legit and he got an ownership into his name. i was surprised that it was still in the system truthfully. lol

-anyway just curious what makes some usable and some not besides the condition of it. i keep an old junker car here to throw scarp metal in and when i take them to the scrap yard the ownership is no big deal today.

The most common other reason some plates do
Not pass is the possibility that the same number/letter sequence is already in the system as a current plate number. This also includes motorcycle tags!
Bet,

I have a brand new pair of 1965 plates. They still have the brown wax paper between them. These have never been used. The Ministry would not accept them for that reason.

Are you sure is wasn’t because the number is issued as a current number?
