if you just want a "driver" type motor how's about a 4.6 ford mod motor with a carb?
paint the block blue and the black plastic valve covers silver for that authentic "cammer" look along with the aluminum heads timing cover and intake
toss some nice aftermarket pulleys at it to make it look cool and call 'er done
simple as hell cheep as can be IF you get a decent motor that isn't in need and they're plentiful enough you can "subscribe" to them as used motors seeing as rebuilding them is ridiculously expensive
my 4.6 went to the bone yard with 580 000 KM's on 'er and never needed anything other than an alternator , once
- it also didn't see a single oil change in the ten years I drove it-- there was a hole in the oil pan at about the 3 litre mark so it just got topped up again and again .. usually when the cam chain adjusters would start to knock somewhere around two liters
if it cam survive ME when I don't care...then it MUST be a good product ya know what I mean ?
to add I only scraped it as I had a better vehicle in my truck .. and the grand merc was worth 4 hun at the time for scrap
just remember the newer two valve motor is MUCH better than the early version and you want to stay the hell away from the '04 &^ three valve motors
a 5.4 MIGHT seem like a good idea but there's no intakes for them - and compared to the 4.6 they are physically HUGE
and the adapters for the 4.6 manifold onto the 5.4 isn't the best plan though it might work better with a carb than injectors as the adapters mess up the injector's shot at the port passages... which is the reason the adapters aren't quite what many would hope
as for the 4.6 mod motors , remember YOU CAN"T BUILD A 400 HP MOD MOTOR FOR ANYTHING UNDER 12K
unless you buy a nitrous kit...
and if you have bags of money it's good to know the 2 valve "trick flow' heads flow as much as a stock unported four valve head
but you need trick flow's cams and rockers too as stuff changes with their cylinder heads ... and then you'll be about halfway through that 12K..
and as I think of it right now , there is , .. if , you have enough room , ..length wise , .. for
ummm the , uh , umm ..a.. V10 ..?? and there's a lot of old junky super duty trucks & vans out there these days too
if you "format" your build around the mod motor platform that also leaves the possibility to upgrade to a supercharged
F150 lightning motor too
and it's still two valve to keep things simpler though it won't help with cost at that point either
