Rebuilding engine in the 50
Permalink

Hey all , just a question a friend brought up while we were talking about me possibly freshing up the ancient beatty      woods sbc in my 50 chebby truck .

my truck was built into a hot rod around 1976 or so . the sbc has been in there ever since , its running fine enough power to throw the truck around with ease . But if I freshen it up , the motor is gonna have to be repainted  A ) so its gonna look all pretty in there under the hood . B) if by chance it gets pulled over , inspected etc . What is the ruling re emmissions on a motor put into an older vehicle . The motor is a 68 and been in there since 76 , I remember reading about emission rules etc regaurding engines put into hot rods after 1999 ???? .  if its all clean and new looking how do I prove its actually been in there since that date ( 1976 ) . Of course me an my buddy may just be mistaken remembering the ministry info

The motor is pre emissions, so it doesn't matter how pretty it looks, they can't charge you with anything missing. They go by the date code on the engine. Regardless of looks, you still have to meet basic rules that apply to your engine now and after you paint it. This is talked about all over the site. Search it out.

If they will only accept a bill from a mechanic shop for the install, from before 1999, they can ask for any emission equipment from 1968, including smog pumps if they were used then.

But, just tell them the truth. They have to prove differently. (innocent until proven guilty, ha..ya, right)

Just go to the top of this page, click on search, enter emissions in the box and hit enter. There has been all kinds of discussion on the site regarding this subject.

When I enter 'emissions' in the search box, this is what comes up. I haven't read some of these for a long time, but if you read them all, they should get you in the general direction.

here it is in a nut shell

Pulled this from the act. Any modified car with an engine pre-emission controls, (probably 1968), must meet 1980 test results even if the engine has no emission pieces. The simple answer for 1980 test results seems to be Hydrocarbons 600PPM and Carbon Monoxide 5%/vol. This is pretty easy to meet. I would also imagine this standard applies to any pre 1980 engine installed in a 'hot rod'.

You never said what year the engine is. Do you have any pictures of the truck from pre 1999? If it is a 1976 motor, it will require all the smog gear that came that year. Maybe you could contact MTO and find out what they want. I did. Go to alocal garage that might still have a emissions tester and find out what your engine reads. Tune it accordingly. Being proactive in these situations usually saves a lot of hassles down the road.

By the way, after almost 1200 postings, why are you still hiding? Give us at least a first name and where you are from. Anonymous questions are bull **** around here.
