I recently swapped out my 305 for a 383 stroker. I'm not reading anything on my temp guage in the truck. I used the same temp sensor by the thermostat housing and what I believe is the temp switch in between number 1 and 3 cylinders. Do I need the temp switch if I'm not using an electric fan at the moment?
The sensor for the gauges should be between 1 and 3 spark plug, left side. Single spade terminal. The coolant temp sensor for the ECU (if your still fuel injected|) is else where IIRC, been along time since I worked on that stuff.

if your saying you have no heat gauge as is now, you should have something somewhere reading the heat especially with the stroker motor being new to the truck. stroked engines will need good coolant circulation and good air flow, they will run warmer especially compared to today's low compression stuff. i had to either put a fan on or a bigger rad in the chevelle when the bigger motor went in, i went with the bigger rad.
besides the speed meter the heat gauge is the one i look at most as the temperature goes up outside, old habits are hard to break i guess. lol none of my bee's wax but i read it as no temp gauge temporarily.
shag766, I'm currently not driving the truck. I still have a ways to go yet. I would like to have the gauges working properly first. Plus there's no exhaust just headers, a little loud Neighbors love me. Lol. But once everything is put together I will put in a bigger rad or a couple electric fans. Thanks for the tip.
Before you take it out check the metal part of the sender to make sure it is grounded to the block with a continuity tester or a test light depending how you do it. If you used T tape it could be insulating the sender from grounding. Just a guess. TMJ
if you do have an air bubble you MIGHT be able to bleed it out by removing a T stat housing bolt
- IF those bolt holes go right through to water like many do
my 2.2 dodge 4 bangers have a pipe plug in the t stat housing mount area for just that reason
drilling a small 1/8 inch hole in the t stat that will be exposed to coolant can eliminate this issue too
just be sure to put the stat in with the hole at the top or highest point as it sits
