i read in the paper that lake erie is still flooding in western ontario in places and am curious why is all.  i was down to a marina on bay of quinte i have used over the years when i had more than a fishing boat for a visit and i noticed that the bay is still a foot or 2 higher than normal for this time of year also. is this the new normal or the start of a new normal?

I think it comes and goes.....Wasaga Beach is high this year apparently. About 1985, i rented a cottage there and the water was almost up to the front door. Other years it was way down. Not sure why though.

We have been flooded in 2017 and 2019 in Port Hope . Shore trails washed out
beaches and marina closed because of high water. Councils from all around Lake
Ontario are protesting the 2014 edict about the dams on the St. Lawerence.
Some blame climate change, some blame shipping company's using bigger ships
needing higher water levels. Most blame the 2014 deal though that controls
water levels in he lakes with late opening of those dams. Ed

Reiterating what Ed said. It's all about Plan 2014 which is an agreement between Canada and the US to keep the Iroquois dam closed to keep water levels artificially high for shipping. It has caused billions of dollars in damage and many have lost good parts of their shoreline. The St. Lawrence Commission doesn't seem to care and will continue to do so. There is a massive up swell of resistance but it doesn't look to hopeful for the near future. Our water front is still up about 18" for this time of year. We are on West Lake which is an extension of Lake Ontario. Owning water front has become less attractive.

Profit before people or the environment. Gotta feed the corporate bottom line and to hell with the consequences.
A lot of people with waterfront properties can't get ins anymore. Some municipalities aren't fixing waterfront
infrastructure destroyed by water levels because there is no use throwing more money away. This after spending
millions on waterfront parks and marinas.Wonder if the corporations will have to cough up for damages. Ed .

along with that ed i just remembered they were flooding out bad down in ta-ber-nac province for the last couple of years and holding it back to clear down there. didn't one of the burbs down there let millions a gallons of raw sewage go into the st lawrence 3-4 years ago before it busted out on it's own before treatment. this year even had the ottawa river flooding bad just below ottawa if i remember right and it's all into the same water course.

you hit it with the height warren, i was guessing 1.5 to 2. feet up at the marina. i find it hard to judge the height plus-minus along a shore line but i was sitting there on a buds boat and looking at the cement wall entrance in and thought it was high for this time of year and then i read about some trouble their still having on lake erie, with erie being the shallowest of them all it would reflect more on the shoreline.

i am planning on selling this place so i have been looking for something up around the peterboro area and the location to water is definitely something that comes into play anymore. i have been in a couple of places for sale up there and they were tucked with the water damage they were trying to cover up. that 18" you figure is trillions X100 of gallons on the size of this water shed.

then you come home and look at all the brown crispy grass, go figure eh.

i don't think some of those places that can't get flood insurance any more shouldn't of got a building permit in the first place either ed, my thinking. watching the red river in manitoba on the tele for years flooding out small sub-divisions of newer homes didn't make sense. how did they get a permit in the first place. there is a newer small division here on the end trenton and i just shake my head how they got the permits for there. years ago when we raced sleds on the ice there you could see it was on a swamp on quinte bay.

and talking about profit first, didn't one of our prime minsters own canada steamship lines, i think his first name was paul if i remember right, lol he would be the boy to stick handle the paper work for Plan 2014. another plan that is going to bust is the one where neither side can run much past the shores for water. the first one has started with some trick paper work in michigan. the inland towns water had been contaminated for years.

i'm done my rant, lol, who's next

Yup Paul Martin CSL same guy wanting everyone to pay there fair share of taxes while registering his compinay ships in Panama to avoid taxes.
Same guy talking about the environment and ovoiding the environmental costs of scrapping ships here and sending them to Pakistan where
scrap them on the beach . But was ok to him cause its there problem not ours. No matter how you look at it money is always first. I am sure those
subdivisions were challenged but the lure of all those fees from building permits and property tax money probably won out over any protest. Ed

yeah it's kind of an oddity that we don't allow building on floodplains around toronto

probably one of the few things t-o ever did get right

though I think it might have been more an excuse for a land grab..but I'll save getting into my usual rouge park BS propaganda rant for now though

but it is - funny the more they promote it the less park we actually have though , living in the area 55 years now.. I noticed

not to mention "their" leaving all the scrub brush and fallen material to go wild as they like to say creates a california style wildfire hazard right in the middle of urban utopia

(DURRRRR)

there was a grass fire on top the cliff opposite the glen eagles property which was directly across the street from me

called it in , the fire truck stopped at my place and I actually had to give them directions to get to it as they couldn't drive the truck across the metal bridge right below the cliff and had to go all the way around to pickering to get to it

that don't sound like a prepared crew to me....

We got home from Sauble beach a couple of weeks ago and the water was so high there the beach was less than a third of the size it was last year. Never seen the water so high there.

My cottage is half way between Goderich and Kincardine. I have groin walls perpendicular to the shore line. Last year in August they were out of the water by a foot and a half. This year I took a picture of my wife standing on the groin and it looks like she's walking on water. She can, you know "walk on water", but don't tell her I said so OK!
