A friend recently gave me a steel table 2 1/2' x 5'. It seems perfect for welding and stuff I think. It was built in 1955 and it is on wheels that lock if I want and is heavy as sin. So my question is, if I want to mount a vise on it, where is the most appropriate place ? Is it just a question of personal choice or the kind of work to be done on it or is it universal that everyone always mounts a vise at point ... ? I just don't want to be drilling holes all over this nice smooth working surface trying to find a spot where the vise is handy but never in the way. Maybe there is some kind of quick release bolt/clamp I could use to remove the vise easily when not needed ?
If you are like me, where ever you put it, the second time you need it the part will be too long or wrong angle. I ended up with mounting holes at all four corners and one set in the front centre edge. Keep mounting bolts hand tight and move it when you want?
Thank you both very much. I really hesitated to post thinking it might be a stupid question but then I figured this has always been the place for the right answers. Thank you for taking the topic seriously. I will get right to it today.
If it was mine I would put it on the long side at the corner. Whatever works for your location in your garage. There should be a third hole at the back of the vise. If the bench top is thick enough drill and tap the holes. When you lay out the holes clamp two pieces of steel or wood in the vice so you can get the vise out far enough to clear the bench when you use it. IMO TMJ

Heres my train of thought, mount a Reese trailer hitch receiver on the end of the table, below surface and have a removable
plate made to slip the vice in place when required, otherwise as mentioned before,it will be in the way more often than its
handy..

Make sure the receiver is the same size as the one on your truck, then you can work out on the driveway or take it with you.

This is what I am working towards.
Picked up a 2" receiver at Princess Auto a few weeks back when on sale.
Now just need to get some 2" square tubing and plate steel to mount some tools.
