1927 Ford model T startup issue
Permalink

Hi all, purchased a 1927 Model T Cupe. New to this historical vehicle.

Having issue on startup. Looks like the gasoline is not getting into carburetor. When unscrew the gas line that connected to carburetor, I see a steam flow off gas.

Carburetor's drain plug is in the bottom middle. Not sure about the model.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Ok, Got to ask, is this a stock 27 or a modified hotrod type? If stock, the choke rod is also the fuel shutoff and mixture control. You have fuel to the carb, so it may very well be shut off. (As it should be when not in use) Henry provided that feature so you wouldn't lose a tank of gas overnight when parked because the float/needle and seat wasn't sealing. If it's off, it will feel like any other tap or valve, turned to the left until it stops is off. Turned to the right will open the valve and allow fuel through. (This is a threaded needle and seat and that is how they provide the adjustment.) 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns to begin with will likely get you started. Fine tune it with more or less turns to find the sweet spot from there. Don't be afraid to give it a fair amount of advance when even idling. To little advance will heat the exhaust manifold up cherry red, gas is being burnt in the manifold instead of the cylinder. Ignition advance will start the process sooner, and have the fuel burnt in the cylinder instead of sneaking past the valves at valve overlap. The learning curve is steep on the old stockers, there are a few illustrated examples of the control settings online. But you have to remember these are just suggestions, not carved in stone settings. No two are alike, you will have to learn your car.

There's really no need to be like this, we are a car forum, guess what I'm as much a T guy as I am a hot rod guy..
I thought we were here on this forum to become friends and help each other. Not deter and condemn...

Nice post Chris, good on you for offering help and not smack talk like some others. If we don't
help out those in the hobby there won't be one soon. Hope he finds the answers he needs cause I probably
couldn't start a stock T if my life depended on it . Hell I have enough trouble getting the 55 started some days. Ed
