I bought some timing tape for my harmonic balancer so I have to clean my balancer. I need a larger socket to fit the bolt so I can turn my balancer but I don't know what size socket to buy. I have a 66 289 Mustang motor. The biggest I have is 22mm and I know that's too small.
How much too small? It could be 7/8" or 1". You should also have a 24" ratchet. Makes the job so easy. I'm sure Bill can help you with both. Can you measure the bolt head?
I have a long ratchet. I'll take some play-doe out and push it over the bolt head to get an impression that I can measure. I could borrow one off my neighbour or ask Bill but Alyce got back from London (taking care of her sick sister) so we are self isolating for another week. I am just making a list of tools I have to buy (again).
Thank you everyone. I do have ratchets. I just don't have the right size sockets. I can't see the bolt but I can feel it so I thought pushing some putty over it would give me an impression I could measure. I got it sorted out though. Thank you. I will add 15/16 to my list of tools to buy but what do I need a "puller" for ? I just want to turn the balancer so I can clean it so I can add timing tape. I do have one of those tools for measuring an outside gap (I forget what it is called) but I don't think it will reach. That bolt is very recessed and because I can't see it, I don't know if I would be on the 'flat to flat' edge of the head. But as I said, I figured it out. Now I will document it in my notebook for any future work on my balancer.
Jim, take a 13/16 and a 15/16 socket. See which one fits the bolt. If it's sloppy go down one size, if it doesn't even go on the bolt, it's to small. It should be standard, not metric.
A 13/16 is what you would use for your lawnmower spark plug. LM series like r19LM.
You only need a 3" extension to reach it. Actually any extention will work but thems are tight.
I'd suggest your impact, cause it will squeeze right in there. Using a Johnson bar is ok too, but you'd have to give it good quick crack to break it loose.
The puller you can only use AFTER the bolt is out. The puller has a cone to fit inside the crankshaft taper. An impact is best cause it's quick, but dampers have bolt holes for the pulley, so ya just use 3 longer bolts (so ya don't screw up your originals) and boom, out she comes.
Make sure you're reasonably straight, cause you don't want to mess that timing cover seal up.
Thank you Supernash but I am not pulling off my balancer. I just want to turn it so I can clean it with steel wool and then apply my new timing tape. I guess 123Pugsy also thought I wanted to 'pull' my balancer but no, just cleaning. I have to turn it to get all the way around it. But thank you.
