Last week I went to Peterborough Automotive to get paint.  The gentleman there brought out a colour sample catalogue to colour match and after about 15 minutes suggested I go to NAPA.  He said they might have an exact match there.  So I went and was told that the guy who did paint was on a call and I should come back in 20 minutes.  So I returned about half an hour later.  Upon my return, I told the guy there that I'd like to have him look at my truck to match the colour so I could buy some paint.  He said "That will be $20 for me to look at it." I thought about it for about 5 - 10 seconds and declined the offer.  He then said, "OK, $10."  I thought about it for about 2 seconds and declined that offer and left.  I returned to Peterborough Automotive and related the story to them.  At first they were astounded.  Then when the laughter died down they thought it more than amusing.  I bought my paint at Peterborough Automotive and doubt I'll return to NAPA anytime soon.

So if anyone out there is thinking of going to the NAPA store (Sidey Automotive) in Peterborough for a colour match, you might want to reconsider.

You're right, it is amusing. I'm surprised they didn't charge you $20 to get the "on call guy" to come to the store. Ridiculous..........lol

It gets better. I wrote to NAPA management and told them of my 'adventure'. Their response was short but it did include "thank you John". My name isn't John. In their defence, after reminding them of my name, they said they caught that error right after hitting send.

Careful, they charge $5.00 to read e-mails and $10.00 to respond!

Nappa is not really an automotive paint supply store with any knowledge of paint. My work had a paint contract with them for 5 years. I know way more about their own products than they do. The autobody supply stores should have trained techs for paint problems and colours. They can scan solid colours not bad but most other colors are hit and miss. The camera for scanning would point them towards a colour code or make its own color.

The newer cars are a pain for colour match as there can be upwards of 15-20 variants.

Good to know. Thank you. I should mention that after relaying my adventure to the staff at Peterborough Automotive, they told me that the 3 ladies who used to work at that NAPA store all left together years ago to come and work at Peterborough Auto. I'm not only learning about how to build and paint, I'm learning where to buy.
