Oil Filters
Permalink

I just wanted to put this out there to see what everyone thinks.

I usually change my own oil and for my whole life, I have used nothing but Fram oil filters and I have never had an issue.

Now I understand, from youtube I think, that Fram is probably the worst filter on the market.

Just wondering what everyone else uses? Has anyone had oil filter issues?

Thanks.

I apprenticed on Volvo and we ran the "Fram Orange" on all the million mile cars so I find it hard to believe they don't do a good job.  The youtubers that cut filters apart and claim to find faults don't seem to understand how filters work very well.  In fact the only filter I've ever had issues with are Amsoil filters on newer Dodge Hemi's.  They restricted oil flow and set codes after a short time in service.  The Amsoil dealer did offer to replace them with another manufacturers filter at no cost though.

yep same here.. handy available fram filter will do

it doesn't need to be NASA approved.. it's going in a coffee can and into the garbage .. soon..

and most cars have a filter bypass if there's a filter issue so no big deal really

I can say I've pulled a lot of K&N air filters at the wreckers.. junk..if you hold a used K&N up to the light you'll notice a lack of filter material at each fold

million mile filter...now THAT's funny.. cough

I'll add .. I go 17 000 - 20 000 km's between oil changes in my daily driver too...and all I use is good old dinosaur oil.. Quaker state and ONLY Quaker state..

got 580 000 km's outta my 95 grand marquis ..it still ran like new when I scraped it..and I didn't do an oil change on that one ...ever ..in the ten years I drove it..

granted new oil still went in regularly .. it leaked at the 3-4 liter full point ..took 5.. rusty oil pan..

truck just turned 377 000 tonight .. been a year and a half since the last oil change .. but I'm planing one soon..

it still runs like a new motor too..and it turned twenty on the 19th of last month

I haven't had an engine bearing or ring issue since I learned to leave the castrol junk on the store shelf

used to run 2.2 dodge turbo 4 bangers... cost me 6 consecutive motors in 6 years .. using castrol

just at operating temp , the 5w 30 , 10w 30 and even 20 50 would not show an oil level on the dipstick..because CASTROL has no cling.. so it just ran right off the stick as it was pulled out..

switched to Q-state and all my probs went away..and no I'm not willing to try "something else" not one failure in thirty  years since...!!

and I sure as hell don't need to waste a single cent on "synthetic" bull flap either

and..<< THAT truck<<..5.4L... gets 19.2 mpg average .. 99% city driving..&.. 25.5 driving up Simcoe st to Port Perry at a nice steady 85K's

and my city mileage could be better.. but I usually drive away from the light when it turns green ..first

LOL, I should explain, Volvo used to award vehicles with high milage a plaque to show how far they had been driven.  The cars got serviced at the regular intervals but always with the Fram orange filters.  If those little 4 cylinder engines made the million mile club on Fram Orange, thats enough proof of quality for me!

We had a customer that swore by Wix filters, claimed he got 20% better gas milage with them!  I always wondered where he bought his cool aid?

Yes, I have seen oil filter failure. A friends car lost all oil pressure. Towed it to the shop I was at. Checked it all over, Confirmed no bearing damaged, spun a new filter on it, fired it up. Never had another  problem.

Active Engines built my 496 and they recommended a Fram filter and Brad Penn partial synthetic oil. They have probably built more high HP engines than anyone in Canada over the 40 years they were in business. Good enough for me.

I remember that, at the time the author admitted " In reality, I am an Electrical Engineer with no qualifications in the area of filtration analysis" but a good quality video and he makes money everytime you watch it.  There is a similiar quality one video endoresing fuel line magnets.

At the end of the day, if you do your oil changes on time and use good oil, Fram is all you need to make the engine live to the million mile mark.  If you frequently forget to change oil, overtighten filters or prefer the fancy paint on the Wix filters you should probably spend the extra.  If not, you are just flushing money down the toilet.

At NAPA, I get the NAPA Gold for about the same price as a FRAM and after investing boat loads of money in my engines, why would I use anything less?  I also only use Brad Penn or whatever it is called now.

I watched the videos on Fram after the guy at NAPA suggested I do so. I have bought Gold since and will probably stay with that but the Fram video was scary if what they say in the video is true.

Don't get me wrong, I used to use Wix myself but on my big $$ 440, the filters looked suspiciously clean when I would take the time to cut them open.  It turns out, the bypass valve in the Wix were set at something like 11 PSI which means that with my heavier oil and high volum oil pump, the filter was running in bypass most of the time.  The Frams would go into bypass at 18 psi, so I switched and never looked back.  Felt kinda raped by the whole experience because the Wix filter was not actually filtering anything whatsoever.  Things may have changed since then but why risk it, even if they are cheaper?

Actually the Wix is working quit efficiantly. Its my understanding that the filter bypass is actuated only when the filter clogs thus 11 lbs would be better than 18 lbs. Use whatever you think is best. For me its Wix or Purolator.

Not try to "convert" anyone, just sharing experience.  For the record, the bypass valve in your oil filter opens on virtually all cold starts, particularily if you run a thick oil.  In my case the Wix filters in the trunk were filtering almost as much oil as the one on the engine.  LOL
