1952 Chev truck vin tag
Permalink

Ok so for a few years I been kicking around the idea of building a clone of my 50 chev truck as a 4x4 with a diesel motor . Like mount body to a dodge cummins 4x4 chassis for year round driving and extra towing capacity .

I went to look at a 52 5 window chev truck nice shape , missing a bunch of mechanicals , its partly dissassembled . The body is all there and on a chassis . It has an ownership . But the vin tag was taken off when floor pans and cab corners and inside of cab was repaired detailed and painted and is gone missing . The present owner has an ownership

Question , how huge of a PITA is it to replace that tag legitimately

Sounds like a huge PITA. Where would you get one from?

Also, if it's missing, it could be being used on another truck somewhere. When you go to register it, they may tell you that VIN is in use elsewhere.

Sometimes the vin is stamped somewhere on the body or frame of vehicles also. Maybe a bit of research into whether GM did that on that truck. Doesn't look like it according to these posts though.

I think its just the door post tags ad stamped on engine blocks . The 52 has a later straight 6 cyl and 700r4 just set in place

ponch is going the right way with the research, maybe. my guess would start with getting a check on the ownership you have to see if it is legit, like pugsy brought up, good point lol, and go from there. it may just be doable with a letter or two if the ownership is clear. one from a dealer, preferably a gm one, stating where the vin # was located on that good vin #. the possible other from a reputable body shop saying if all those repairs were done, the vin would of had to come out also. he is not fibbing, he is just stating a fact and nothing else.
it shouldn't be hard today to run a vin before having a chat with the m.t.o. about their end of it, maybe. if it comes up bad it's over, if it comes up ligit you got a shot. it boils down to how bad you want it, i would guess and just thinking out loud is all. i had to get something changed on a ownership that they screwed up about a year earlier on the change from utah to ont. but i still got a letter from the dealer before i talked to them about the problem. i think the letter had some influence on how it went down. it was brought up a couple of times in the hour i stood there and all it stated was a fact, on the ford dealers letter head, that a Q code 67 galaxie would be worth substantially more than the O they had put there, turns out ont doesn't use a Q in their system and it went to O by default. i know it's not the same scenario but it is not a dispute over $$ either. it is a 70 year old vehicle and they have had this come up many times for a lot of years, you just never know till you ask sorta thing.   good luck if you go for it bud.

Yeah I had to do that on my 70 pontiac strato cheif . It was missing a digit onthe serial number on the ownership . It was an ontario car and was owned / driven by the guy I bought it from for 10-12 years . Lucky me I go to put it in my name and its like hey your one digit short ha ha .
I think Ill start by taking the serial number into licence office and get a buyers package done
Its all just the fun of being a hot/street rodder lol
Like really I COULD just go buy a dodge 4x4 cummins truck and leave it stock and do it the easy way .... Buuuuuttt we all know what happens ha ha

Just wondering, is the wheel base and track width for both trucks the same? That is a big problem with frame swaps for the Ford trucks as they are narrower than modern trucks.

Ha ha as a usual hot rodder I havent really picked out a chassis yet lol and to make it even better I axeually like the 55-6 style chev truck body better . Its just I thought I could get a deal on this body .
But maybe then again I could just build a baha bug ?

I haven't read the whole thread but originally you were wondering about a VIN plate for an ownership you have.... I dont see why you cant buy a blank vin plate and have your legal ownership numbers engraved or stamped onto it....
If not I have a 1950 3/4 ton Chevy truck for sale with the tag and ownership for sale.

If You're looking for an easy frame swap for the 50"s Chevy? the S10 is the closest wheelbase and width that I've found ...... there are tons of web sights and information on how and where to modify it to fit....

If I do , do it , I want diesel and 4x4 auto and to stretch it to 4 dr cab . I would want to make it strong enuff to haul my car trailer easily . The 50 is only 3600 ish pounds even being a long box . But there is hardly ay weight in the rear end . making cornering braking etc with a car trailer a bit sketchy

What I thought you were looking to do Is a modern running chassis with an old body on it with the matching ownership to the VIN tag.... this way run what ever frame you want ...
Cut the fenders down the center and make the truck as wide as you want... just depends on how badly do you want it?

Like what this guy did.....

I dont like that look of building vehicles . they just look out of proportion to me .

Maybe two 55-6 cabs and splice them together
The big truck is a three door , supposed to be built by a company , one off deal .
