UPS rate drop

I just ordered a rear view mirror from Third Generation Auto in the US and she told me that UPS rates dropped after the Christmas crush so shipping was actually cheaper with UPS than USPS. Never had that before. Thought you'd all like to know.

How much was the shipping charge? Rear window for what (size)? How much? Was it still more then the cost of the window?

What about customs charges? UPS has always been bad for those.

I will only use them if very last resort. Most times I won't buy from the seller if if shipped by UPS.
They have over charged and broken more of my stuff than not.

Well this is among my first US car parts orders so I'm not really familiar with the usual cost but I know UPS is usually a lot more expensive for me in Canada. But this time the shipping on an order of $66 US with shipping came to $83. It was for a rear view mirror for my 42 Ford pickup. I just can't drive without a passenger side mirror. It drives me nuts trying to back up through the trees. Anyway, she said the cost was actually less to ship UPS. She checked all my options (the lady at Third Generation Automotive.). Nice place. Cost less for parts than the other places like Dennis Carpenter, for the mirror anyway. Now back to focusing on stuff for my rod. Maybe I'll be paying for customs too but I don't have a choice. I have to have a passenger side mirror. If it comes broken, I'll let you know.

I can't get into this debate today because i don't know what is out there for options, but ups has always the default shipper. or in other words, if there was no other choice send it.

cuddles, if you haven't been buying from the south your a newbie.  good for you bud, "Well this is among my first US car parts orders" .

I actually threatened to sue them once for over charging 60-70.00$ duty, on american made rear end parts for a corvette from moser about 25 yrs ago. the 30-35$ bucks they charge on every invoice for clearance i understand because it is a charge but when they wanted duty charges on an amican made part i said, wtf.

it is a new ball game today. ups got a big part of their company bought out by a big canuck company, tfi, and i figured there would be changes.

It sounds like I am going to be paying more from what you tell me here. I will let you know how it goes when the package arrives. Either way, it will be another of my many lessons to learn from (and remember).

Yesterday I ordered parts from Jeg's and parts from Speedway. Normally in a pre-covid world I would have ordered them had them sent to Port Huron Michigan, then gone for a nice little 50 minute drive to pick them up. Shipping in the states is cheap and on a larger order it's free.      When it comes to shipping to Canada it's like open season on us. The Speedway order was two small modules, I'm sure they both will fit in the palm of my hand. Here is the cost of shipping with UPS then there will be taxes at the border and I'm sure brokerage fee's. So this is in USD then times something like 1.3 then add 13 percent on the Canadian amount and brokerage fee's. I know it's not a large amount of money but when it cost double the price of the item to get it there is something wrong.

Sub Total:
Shipping:
Sales Tax:

Order Total:
$35.98
$37.23
$0.00

$73.21

When I buy something from USA, I have it shipped to Blaine, Washington.
There is a company here that goes over the border almost every day to pick things up.
Then I go out to there place at the airport and pick it up.
No UPS and all their inflated rates involved.
If it's a smaller package, I have it mailed to my son in North Carolina. He repackages
it and sends it by mail.

Thank you Jarvis. I have a friend in Florida who I sometimes ask but I try not to inconvenience her and keep my requests to a minimum. She even offered to pick up an intake manifold 100 miles away once. A very nice friend. And I'm a bit distant from the border but my US orders aren't all that frequent. I just thought I'd get this 'must have' item without bothering anyone.

Well, my rear view passenger side truck mirror just arrived. It came to an added $39 and I didn't need it until Spring but for those in a rush, it arrived pretty quickly. And Third Generation Automotive was nice to deal with. Very pleasant. And the mirror arrived intact, no cracks or damage. But from now on I'll be more patient with my ordering. You're right though pugsy - more car parts are fun !

I thought Warren had a thing happening for these shipments ? He'd sure know the ins and outs I'd think with all the stuff he does.

I'm really hoping to do rear suspension this year with Calvert split mono and caltracs on the Nash.

Right now, I can pretty much fire the car up, but I don't dare 'test it'. I have helper springs, helping helper springs that help helper springs back there. Ya, it's a brutal engineering marvel.

77, what you run on that old Gremmy while I think of it ? AMC rear suspension/rear ends were never known to take the test (if ya know what I mean). I have a narrowed 9" with strange axles and a Nod/war case in this car. I just tried to make it work fudging the spring thing and I do regret it. My bad.

Had to stretch the rear quarters/wheel wells to sneak the wide offset wheels and tires in there.

Frustrating but really fun when ya actually get to roll it out and run it. Right guys ?

I figure April I should be running and then look into the springs etc for summer. My son wants to level the shop and go big new. I'm kinda ok wit dat !! I'm on borrowed time now as most of ya know, so ..why not

Yes, Warren gave me a slap on the wrist and reminded me about US shipments. Lesson learned and I doubt I'll forget.
