........if there's something in the water lately. I've been watching vintage cars and trucks for sale on marketplace awhile. It seems lately some guys are losing their minds because the prices for a piece of absolute crap are astronomical. Is it just me, am I a cheap b@st@rd or have some of you been thinking the same thing? Just curious - and I'm NOT talking about stuff posted for sale here.

You are spot on, down here in SC prices have gone nuts,I have looked at a few trucks that I thought I could buy and bring to Ont,but prices have spiked for rusty old crapped out trucks, people have been watching to many of these so called resto shows and auctions,so I am probally not going to buy anything down here and pretty much retire from the buying the southern rust free stuff, just can't afford it!!

On the bright side, it's still fun looking. At least I hope it is cause I can't stop. I can't even sleep anymore.

I think a part of it is the shortage of parts. New vehicles can't get chips for their computer cars, so people are buying used. That drives the prices up.

yea i know some are going to think i took a little extra pain med this morning, pot butter, but, don't ever think it might be all part of a plan of sorts.  it is not only computer parts that are getting harder to find. most of these auto makers have been running just in time, J.I.T., for most parts of an automobile and with the work shortages there are all kinds of parts getting scarce and they are letting it happen for the clean-up.

this e-v car thing is going to hit us like a freight train and there is 50% less parts involved in an e-v car when you take out the combustion engine starting with the rad to the rear end.  that and they say when the 5g network is fully installed and running it will make todays tech look like the stone ages. here is hoping our boy blunder doesn't try to get into bed with china on the infrastructure for this 5k sh!t.

I think its a byproduct of the pandemic.  Customers I've talked to have decided to "pull the trigger" while they still can instead of patiently finishing projects.  One just ordered a GM crate engine and another decided to throw down 26k USD for the Hemi he wanted.  Seems like there is a sense of urgency to "get it done while I still can".  Project cars on the other hand seem to be sitting on websites way past there best before dates with inflated prices.  (sunny summer pics)  Personally, I'm kinda cheap too and I did'nt want to be left holding the bag when values finally drop.  I sold off both Challengers and the 67 Fastback and said never again.  That lasted 6 months and I bought another project.  Painful as it is, I really enjoy chasing the parts, meeting the people and doing the work.

I agree the prices are higher than before ... I personally have been buying parts (mostly on line)...
If I have, let's say $5,000 in parts .... the shipping is probably close to the same.... Even my local parts store...
I ask for an item and they say they will get it.... but then charge me a shipping fee.... I don't get it!

Asking price is one thing. Often you don't find out what it sold for or if it sold. That would be a better indication of value.

Maybe prices are crazy & parts are hard to get because of the pandemic but some things don't change. It's four in the morning and I'm still looking at car stuff. Not buying (being patient) but still looking. Lots to see and lots to learn even about prices.

I did hear one plausible theory.  The pandemic has drastically reduced the amount of money the average household has been spending on vacation trips.  As long as they were not impacted by layoffs or owned a gym, there is some extra cash in the bank to buy a classic car online.  I've been watching the prices on the "bring a trailer" website and the "sold" prices are up significantly from 2 years ago.  Some of the stuff is absolutely bananas, but I guess some folks have a lot of disposable income.  As we discussed before, I'm concerned what gas prices will do to the hobby long term.  I like to drive my cars, not just sit behind them all day.  I think I told you guys, I met a guy online that owned the original truck from TV show "Movin On" which I loved as a kid of 12.  Drove 13 hours to northern Wisconsin to get this pic and buy the guy lunch.  For me, thats what the hobby is, cars/trucks people and relationships.

My wife had a 72 Challenger that looked just like that except her car was the colour of the sky in your photo. We sure miss that car.

LOL, I really liked the color "Plum Crazy Purple" then a friend pointed out an article in Mopar Monthly about how the marketing team at Chrysler called it "Statutory Grape" when it was released.  I still get ribbed about that!
