Tow straps thru the rim
Permalink

Hey all By now we probably all seen those tow trucks using four straps put thru the rims of a vehicle to strap it down to the deck at all 4 corners .

I dont neccessarily like owning or dealing with lowered vehicles but unfortunately out of my four hot rods . I,m selling off the two high riding ones and keeping the two lowered ones . The 50 isnt too bad but with its low front bumper and independent front suspension getting up under the front of it to put straps on the lower c arms is a bit of a word we cant use here lol the back is easy to hook up .

The trans am has eibach lowering kit in it , its not horribly low but getting it strapped to the trailer is really a lot of words you cant use here

Is any one here using the strap thru the rim technique . I,ll have to make 4 new brackets as tie down points . The axle straps like at princess arent long enuff to go thru rim and around the tire . I,m gonna keep my eyes out for local tow trucks and see how they do it

I want to change my tieing the vehicles down to deck from half hour crawling on ashpalt/ gravel to a 5 minute job with no crawling kneeling on the ground

Most towing companies are using them due to lack of factory tie down points. Most car haulers are doing it too.
Having towed before this system came out, I would definitely use it now. I rather tie the wheels down tight and let the suspension jiggle than have the car jerk on the tie downs for the whole trip.
I've more race cars tied down incorrectly than correctly. Too many people still cross strap the cars to the trailer, this is wrong. I learned this from Wreckmaster towing training.

Yea thats true I stopped crossing the straps at the back. But mainly cause its just easier to go straight back . I dont trust the strength of the track system for up over the tires and I dont like the idea of front runners being strapped down on them for a 8 hour trip . I,ll go bug some local tow guys this week

i like using the tire boot method and there is no having to get under the car at any point. just drive onto the trailer and put in park. throw the webbing over the tire and secure on one end and rachet in on the other end per tire.. and as mention above it leaves the suspension full floating.

That's what the U-Haul trailers have. Very easy.

Question here. I was under the impression that by law you have to cross strap. Am I wrong??? Thanks in advance.

If the law required it , the towing companies would be doing it. They never cross strap.

yea, that's where i ran into it the first time about 15yrs ago. i had to bring my f-1 back from the moncton area and they rented me one down there cheap-cheap just to get the trailer back up to ontario. pretty slick system with less effort. i am going to re-do my current trailer over to that system before long, hopefully now that i found one that pulls decent and the bonus is it has a steel floor making it easy to weld the proper brackets in place.
