I cross the border at least six times a year with thousands of dollars worth of stuff. I have it all shipped to a KINEK location and since it is generally being shipped from one state to another, there is no tax charged. When I get to the border and show them a list of what I have, they charge me HST only on the product's cost in CDN$, not the tax if any or the shipping. The tax is no big deal, I have to pay it if I shop in Canada anyway and the product savings are usually great. I have no problem paying the tax, it generally benefits everyone. What I do have a problem with is the insane markups levied by Canadian retailers on the same product if they carry it at all.
Warren
Thinking out loud on this tid bit, i somewhat agree with warren's logic on this. If it was a local ontario rez it would make for a different decision but the border thing is a big deal that could start a big snowball rolling. I haven't bought any large buys for quite awhile now but when i was doing a lot i was doing it the way he is, at a ups store south of watertown. I had a yearly box rented and it was mostly logistics from there with planning ahead and making large buys, all to be delivered to the store on one certain day. I would be there that day for the p/u and tip him off for the extra service sorta thing, back to the border with the same ending as warren.
