Tarif warning

A friend of ours recen tly bought a leather bag for her husband. It came from the states so she had to pay the usual customs and duty but shortly after, she got a bill for $122. for a tariff fee.  I thought all here might want to be forewarned.  I guess anything from the states is going to cost more.  I could be wrong but this is the first I have heard of a purchase from the states with the added fee.

Who sent the $122 bill? Government? I do not think there are tariffs on incoming goods.
She has the bag, don't pay the bill.

If the bag was made outside the US, there will be duties as well as taxes on the item. Canada has no tariffs outside of pre-Trump agreements, especially on items of this sort. Who was the bill from? If it was from the original seller, maybe they got caught up in the Trump tariffs and are now trying to re-coup their losses. I certainly would not automatically pay the invoice. I would check with Border services. Things are always expensive from the US despite our age old beliefs that things are so cheap down there. Double any advertised $US price to get it landed. But, no tariffs.
