Hello everybody from St.Thomas
Permalink

I live just outside St.Thomas and I own a 52 GMC 1/2 ton that I currently have in a million pieces.  Oh well, building it is half the fun.  Currently looking for advice on rebuilding an inline six motor.  Never rebuilt a motor myself, but my dad was a mechanic and I've seen many SBC's rebuilt.  I'm a tool and die maker by trade, so I have some technical abilities.  I have a GMC 302 inline six coming from the states in pieces and will need to put it together.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Jim

Welcome to the site. Had a 250 inline in my 68 Chevelle that was jacked up. There is a lot of performance stuff available for the inlines. I had a set of Langdon headers, an Offenhauser intake with a Holley 400 4 barrel and HEI ignition. My only real 2 cents is that don't expect it to SOUND like a V8 cause it ain't. They can give an unmistakable sound though, that is music to the ears of Inliners.
Good luck to you. Look forward to seeing it when it hits the road.

Welcome to the forum Jim! The truck project sounds cool... nice to hear you're going with the inline six (I'm an inline fan myself, got a 300 six in my truck)... As for rebuilding I don't think I can help too much as I haven't been down that road yet. But post some pics and let us know how it goes! Cheers

Here are some pictures of my truck at its current stage.  My frame just came back from paint and a lot of my body parts are out getting media blasted.

is your 52 american? wouldn't it have a 216 or a 235 chev drive train if it was a canadian truck.

It is a Canadian 9300 GMC and it had a 216 chevy engine in it.  I'm not going original on this truck but would like it to look as original as possible.  I wanted an inline 6 that had more power and a little more fun to drive.  I also like the idea of a GMC engine in a GMC truck.  Thats why I chose the 302.

thats cool. not too many 9300 around. my brother in law has a maple leaf up at the farm and when i open the hood besides a bee nest the rocker cover had gmc in it. last year we put a 261 pontiac 6 into a friends 57 chev truck definitely not a cookie cutter truck.

Id be interested in knowing what the serial number on that GMC motor would be.  302's came in things like dumptrucks, buses, and other big trucks.  Would your brother-in-law be interested in selling the motor out of that dumptruck?

i'll ask, but i think they are still using it to haul wood out of the bush. where would the serial number be? probably have to scrape off a load of grime.

Dont worry about it if they are still using it.  I think its awesome that they are.  Those motors are bullet proof.  I'm not sure where the serial number is but I'll check.
