Does anyone know what I need to do to trade a car from Canada for a car in the US. Both cars are over 20 years old and have to be trailered across the border.

Thanks

GARY

I will try to help you out a bit on this..First off you can not trade a car with anyone in the US for tax purpose's you will still have to pay the HST on the car when you register it in Canada..You will need to have it appraised and pay the tax on the appraised value.. As far as bringing the car into canada that would be same as any car you purchase in the US..They say you are supposed to have the title faxed to the Port of exit that you will exporting the car through 72 hrs prior to you presenting the car for export at US customs..They like to make sure it's not on their wanted list for anything..How-ever I have never stopped at US customs when bringing a vechicle back into Canada..(just sayin).. As far as I can tell Canada border services does not seem to care about that unless you tell them you did not stop then I am not sure what might happen..I have brought about 15 vehicles back over the last 10 years and never stopped at US customs and never had any issue..You will need lots of paper work for Canada customs.. You need a bill of sale ..any e-mails you have dealing with your American friend that can confirm the amount.. or Value of the vehicle..You will have to contact Canada customs about the trade thing..I doubt they will acept that..They want the tax.. As for the person you are trading with ..I have no idea what hoops he will have to jump through..It is no big deal bringing a car or any other vrhicle into Canada it just seems intimidating but it's no more than of a issue than a bike or motor home or any other equipment ..Like I said Canada just wants the money..Taxes'''hope that is of some help..

Do your homework, just a heads-up for your American friend, if he's from the state of New York... they like their $$$ also.
Our winner for this year's Moparfest came from Penfield NY, he won a 1973, 340 Duster, which was appraised at @ $25 K, poor guy had to pay 30% of that value ++ to get the car he won (FREE) home.
Taxes, duty... are always applicable, trade or not.
And paper work, copy of ownership, bill of sale etc...at least 72hrs ahead of time at the border sure helps make things flow smoothly.
Some border crossings are worst then others, maybe get some input on those as well.
