I'm Dave. My family and I will be heading over to Hamilton in the next few months, to settle in your fine land :)
We have been planning this move on and off for the last 16 years, but the timing is now right to make the move.
I have dreamed of owning/restoring classic American cars since I was a kid, but Scotland does not have much of a following or support for such projects. So for the last 25 years or so I've been making do with Euro trash and more recently Japanese sports cars.
I have a million questions of course, as this hot rodding lark is a new language to me, but I'm keen to learn. I actually found this site when I was looking up emmisions law for classic cars, and came across a thread you have on here.
We are so excited to get over there and start our new lifes!
Welcome Dave...to the forum and our country. I came over from England in 1954 at 2 years of age....Its my home, I am sure you will love it here too.
BTW, how did you come accross our forum?...just wondering
Hi, thanks for the welcome.
I was looking up general car stuff, and wondered if you had any exemptions for older cars, with regards to the emissions laws. Like we have the pre 1974 road tax exemption rule.
And of course I found your thread about emissions laws. Very interesting, and a little sad too :(
I have so many ideas of what I want I don't know where to start, but I've been leaning more and more towards trucks recently. Or, I found a cracking Jeep Cherokee Coupe on Kijiji the other day which looks amazing. Here's a pic, it's still available but will be gone by the time I get there no doubt:
There are 2 or 3 threads on the emission subject. If living in Hamilton, you will be affected. There are lots of theories floating around about various things, whether they are all true or not is hard to say. Where I live now, there are no emissions tests, but I guess that could change too......
About the Jeep, they are cool, but I seem to remember they are pigs on gas (petrol).....lol
I'm very used to heavy gas prices and consumption, so I'm not afraid of that, lol.
It will be more of a toy/toys than a daily commute anyway.
And I probably won't be able to afford the insurance for the first year of being a fresh immigrant, so I can just spend that time restoring and admiring.
I have many questions, but I'll move them over to the relevant sections of your board.
Welcome to Ontario Rodder and the colonies Dave. I have family in Glasgow and surrounding area. Hope you and the family have a safe crossing. As Harry says most areas just north of the great lakes and St Lawrence Seaway have emissions testing and then the next county has none( if I lived just 10 miles north east there would be none for my daily drivers.
Thanks again everyone, nice to see an active forum :)
We literally found out this weekend that we will be able to move over soon. My wife has been offered a job transfer to their branch in Burlington, so all we have to do is sell the house and get on a plane.
A million other things to do of course, including organising our two kids and my dog "Hemi"... obviously, lol.
Talking of which, I'd better get off to bed. I need to get up in the morning and phone the estate agent (realtor) and tell them to bring the big "For Sale" board with them.
Welcome from Blackstock Ont as well!! If you bring "BAG PIPES" I'm glad your going to Hamilton [80mi away from me] if not you'll be welcome everywhere {JUST KIDDING}

Welcome to the site Dave. I'll welcome you proper to Canada when you arrive. Vineland is 20 minutes east of Hamilton, will Innis & Gunn suffice?......... and you can bring the Pipes too, my Grand-Dad Baillie used to play........well, sort of.
Welcome from Toronto, Love to see Good people comming here and love to see anyone interested in cars come abord. Great to have you, keep us posted on how its going and let us know if you need a hand
lol, ok... Bagpipes.... NO! Worst "musical" instrument ever invented! I generally run away when I hear them starting up. However, when we were over last July for our recce trip, we met some of the neighbours where we were staying, and we promises to bring over a kilt for a guy called John Ross. He's a cop (detective or something) and what a laugh, lol. So we thought it would be funny to also bring him a set of bagpipes. I can picture it now, John standing in his front garden wearing nothing but a kilt, and attempting to play bagpipes at the crack of dawn, lol. You have guns in Canada right? lol
Is vineland where they make the ice wine? Ailsa (my wife) was telling me about it after she was over earlier this year. Sounds amazing. Although I don't drink, I can appreciate the concept, lol.
I also don't like football (soccer). How can you have time to do footbal AND cars? not possible
Sorry for rambling on, but you have caught me at quite possibly the most exciting time of my life!!
I know for most of you it's just Canada, and where you have always lived, but to us it's actually a long time dream coming true. It will be nice to live in a place that actually has summer. We have not had a completely rain-free day in Glasgow since May, I sh!t you not. It's sooo depressing. I love to work on my cars out on my driveway, but it's just not possible here
Welcome from Brantford as well. 30min from hamilton and I like the bag pipes when there played proper.LOL I really like your art work as well. By the time you get all settled in and unpacked ...it might be car show season again! Your arriving just in time for winter!

Depending on how quickly the house sells, we could be there as early as January. As you say, just in time for winter, lol.
We will have three months rental, paid for by Ailsa's company, so that should see us through to spring, giving us plenty of time to get on our feet, and then it's time for me to start looking for a project :)
I'm really bad for starting a project, falling in love with it, completing it then wanting to sell it and get the next one, lol. It's not the worst addiction to have, well, maybe financially it is.
A few yrs. ago my wife & I were in Oben on the west coast of Scottland & the locals said "if you don't like the weather, just wait a few min. & it will change season's, all 4 within a hour"Beautifull country to 'visit" but wouldn't want to live there or England, just too dam'd expensive!!

I still don't understand the issue with Pipes, I love 'em - as you said - if they're played correctly.. Crack of dawn with a little mist in the air sounds just about right. I live next to a "Retirement Community" full of folks with too much time and money with nothing positive to spend either on. I'd be happy to provide the service for them.
Yep. Icewine. Good but over-rated and over-priced. Too sweet for my taste, like drinking syrop but apparently a lot love it. Bring Ailsa and the kids, she and Sue can sample the local offering. The kids can play bumper pool.
And you don't like soccer......you're not leaving Scotland voluntarily, they're kicking you out right? Their loss, our benefit. I HATE footie.
welcome from Cobourg. been awhile since i drank the royal mile. our family has been over here eight generations from south of Edinburgh in the Lanark area. whats really funny is they all brought the Scottish village names with them when they settled in the Ottawa valley. i do remember the last time i was over, i think it was your only day of summer that year sometime in late july.

Call me suspicious but ... doesn't like the bag pipes and doesn't drink (????) ... if Dave doesn't golf then we'll know for sure he's an imposter . Possibly spying for the Ruskies .
Welcome to Canada anyhow, won't be the first spy we've let in ... (well, I mean when you actually get here ).

Welcome to our side of the pond. There's a nice Scottish shop about an hour north of Hamilton in Fergus, Ont in case you get homesick
Fergus also has a large annual Scottish festival every summer.

Gearhead, he's trying to get out of Scottland, he may not "want" to be reminded of it!!! Think Dave will find "OUR" football is totally different than what he's thinking!!! We have "FOOTBALL, & then theres soccer thats not too popular here other than the Italians & Portugese, that go nuts over that sport!!!! You should have come last winter, why, because we didn't have one!!this yr. will likely revert back to what we are used to, SNOW & lots of it. I hope I'm wrong, liked last yr. better!!!

You may be on to something there.
I hate the drink culture over here, always have. The idea you should look forward to the weekends, purely to go out Friday and Saturday nights to get completely rat-arsed, waking up the next day and saying thinks like "last night was mental, can't remember a bloody thing" just totally disgusts me. Waste of money, and unnecessary new facial scars.
I hate soccer. I played it at school once, seemed like a lot of work for very little enyoyment, lol. And I then I grew to hate the sectarianism that went along with it. In Glasgow if you are catholic, you HAD to support Celtic, and if you were a protestant, you HAD to support Rangers. You may have heard of the "Old Firm". This was the term used to describe a football match between these two Glasgow clubs. Generally there was a lot of alcohol, abuse and fighting envolved. Not much actual foorball. Again, not my scene.
I love the idea of golf. Unfortunately I'm just not very good at it, lol. I was invited along to a fancy club once, might have been Turnberry, and on taking my first swing at the first tee-off, I gouged a giant hole in the ground with my driver, the ball fired straight up in the air, landing about 4 feet infront of me. I could just feel the whole club gasping in horror. I just picked up my ball and walked on to the next hole, stuff the Mulligan, lol.
I like Haggis, don't like Irn Bru, love fishing, hate football (might have said that already)
But I do love Scotland. It's like a miniature Canada, and I will hang on to my Scottish heritage, well, at least until I get to Tim Hortons :)
Welcome to the site! You are aware of our winters here right?
lol, indeed I am.
Are you aware of our summers?
Here's an example of the average summers day in Scotland..
To be fair, you save a lot of time by not having to rinse your car off when you wash it.
The last rain free day we had in Glasgow was May. Didn't have the barby out once this year, which is a shame coz I'm an awesome cook! Well, no-one's has ever complained...... or been seen again
Welcome to the site. Will be looking for you come summer Dave. Funny...I grew up in Burlington but now live in Scotland (Ontario)! Judging from your other posts, you're gonna fit right in.

I,m in Burlington and if you need anything when you get here...give me a call, I'll "Hook you up"
Your welcome to come to the shop....BUT NO KILTS! I don't want any "surprises`when you bend over to pick up tools.
I dont ever want to hear.....If it`s not SCOTT.....it`s CRRRRRRRRRRAP! ( got a neighbour that says that all the time )
hahaha, that made me chuckle. I had to Google the "If it's not Scottish" thing, lol, frighteningly acurate.
Thanks for the offer, and no, Kilts are for weddings and .... umm, yeah, just weddings, lol.
I take it you guys know all about safety and emissions stuff when I buy a car.
Also, I need to find out about car insurance. At present I have a car trade policy which allows me to drive any vehicle in my name or under my control. Makes it easy for me to buy a car on a whim, lol.
If you buy a used car....my son is a mechanic in Burlington.....he can help you with what you need to get a car on the road. ( you can trust him....honest mechanic......kinda an oximoron?!
Tons of insurance companies for regular cars....bundel house and car insurance for discount...custom cars requires special insurance....can help point you in the right direction for that also.

Thanks for the re-assurance. We have an aunt on Van Island and they do seem to get as much rain as us in winter.
I don't mind the cold, it's the damp that really gets to you, especially as you get older.
It's going to be really strange to have an actual summer next year. Maybe we will miss the rain....... naaaaaah, lol.
Oh, news flash!!!
Looks like we will be heading over this sunday to activate our work permits. Ailsa will be working in the Burlington branch for a week while I just cruise about during the day looking for somewhere to live, lol. I suppose I should check out the schools too. (for my kids, I'm not a pervert) lol.
Will be sooo cool to be back in Canada again, can't wait :)

Here's the prime reason that we didnt move to Canada's west coast (aside from rediculous real estate vales)...this is their winter. Cold and rainy. On a calm, sunny Ontario winter day you can have an enjoyable day outside if dressed for it. I've worked in the snow many times.

I am in my last week of trade school next week so if some guys wanna meet up that might work...
How do you feel about "American" Football?
I used to watch American football back in the 80's. I choose the Bronco's as my team, no idea why, they had a habit of getting to the superbowl then completely blowing.
Recently got into Nascar, and getting to grips with the "rules" lol. Watched a race a few months back when a driver chucked out a water bottle to make the safety car come out. When interviewed he said "apparently I chucked a water bottle out my car"...WE ALL SAW YOU DO IT!!, lol.
We went to the Pepsi 400 in Daytona a few years back. What an atmosphere, it was brilliant. Plus we got lost on the inside of the track so got to see how the rednecks live, lol.
