Longest introduction thread ever... lol

Sorry about that

Did I spot someone slagging off my rear spoiler?

I'll have you know that's a functional spoiler...... for when I go rallying through the forrestry roads in the highlands..... yeah, fair point, it's just cosmetic, lol.

We're big on spoilers in the UK. I don't see many big uns in North America. Probably some law about creating too much friction on the roads and causing global warming, or it's dangerous to the public when you run them over and the get caught in your boot spoiler as the flip over your car.

Yet again today is pi$$ing down in Glasgow. I think I'm developing gils. A weeks worth of rain is forecast for the next two hours, and considering how much rain we get in a week anyway, that's LOT of rain, lol.

Oh, funny story....

We had the surveyor out yesterday to do out home report for our house sale. You know he marked the property down for having a water-logged garden!!!, Really??!!! Bar Steward!

I'm actually doing my best Gene Kelly as I splash through the puddles when out with the dog, knowing that I won't have to do it for too much longer.

Your street looks nice Sacotu. That second car looks like it's trying to be a BMW 3 series. Nice wheels.

Hollywood could have saved a fortune if they had just filmed the Twilight series in Glasgow. Vampires can walk about in perfect safety during the day, lol.

I would be very interested to see how life is out in the sticks. We have a couple of young teens, so it might be a bit unfair to make them live somewhere without nearby friends. It's something to think about for the future though, when they bugger off to college/merchant navy, lol

i was sitting outside without a jacket at a picnic table at coffee break this afternoon. looks to be another mild winter. thanxs for the compliment on the street. the county just spent the big bucks last year filling in the culvert and giving us curbs. downside was we lost our mail box and had to go to a superbox.

I have an update on our short trip.

Next week was too soon to organise work permits. We have booked flights for Saturday the 8th December. Ailsa will be working in Burlington for the week, I will be cruisin about looking at houses and cars.

Meanwhile back in Glasgow, we have heavy rain, sleet and hail-stones. I'm gettin wet today.... for a change, lol.

It might surprise you. We don't have a cimema or bowling alley in town but we're not exactly isolated either. Close enough to St Catharines for a kid to find anything they're looking for......and what a parent hopes they don't find.

When you live on a tiny island like the UK, two miles outside a city is classed as countryside, lol.

I'm not quite ready for barren wasteland yet. I need a 24 hour supermarket within 10 minutes drive in case I run out of milk for the kids cornflakes in the morning.

I'm well aware of the size of Ontario, and indeed the vastness of Canada. I can't wait to get over there and start exploring, although by the looks of it, anything north of Churchill will mean throwing a saddle on a Polar bear, lol.

But for now, the Hamilton area will suit us fine.

Heres a Scottish story for you...    to make you smile....

Two Scottish nuns have just arrived in Canada by boat, and one says to the other, "I hear that the people in this country actually eat dogs."

"Odd," her companion replies, "but if we live in Canada , we might as well do as the Canadians do."

As they sit, they hear a pushcart vendor yelling, "Hot dogs, get your dogs here," and they both walk towards the hot dog cart.

"Two dogs, please!" says one. The vendor is very pleased to oblige, wraps both hot dogs in foil and hands them over.
Excited, the nuns hurry to a bench and begin to unwrap their 'dogs..'

The mother superior is first to open hers.

She begins to blush, and after staring at it for a moment, leans to the other nun and in a soft brogue whispers, "What part did you get?"

Hey Dave, why are you thinking of Hamilton if you dont mind? Is it due to your line of work? Are you planning on renting or buying a home? The Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo and Cambridge areas (Called the Tri-cities area) only roughly a half hour north of Hamilton has a ton of smaller automotive and other manufacturing plants. Kitchener & Cambridge is the # 1 best real estate buy in Canada right now followed by Hamilton. http://www.ontariomortgagesuperstore.com/ontarios-top-10-cities-to-buy-real-estate

Hamilton has tons of industy but also has a lot of air pollution that gets caught in the lower part of the city due to the surrounding Niagara Escarpment. Its a really diverse and interesting city though, I'll certainly give it that. It has the most waterfalls of any city in the world...my useless trivia for the day

Doesn't matter what they chuck in hot dogs, we'll still scoff them up, lol.

Not sure about that poutine stuff though. My dog was sick this morning, and that's what I thought of.

Here's a formula...

Hot dog = lips and a$holes

Dog eats hot dog

Dog is sick

Sick = Poutine

Poutine = half digested (by a dog) lips and a$holes

... enjoy your lunch

Agreed Burlington and Oakville = $$$$$! Grimsby is nice but a little upity and $$ from what I understand. Your budget really depends on lot size and condition. I dont think you will find anything in the $250K range, and you might have to settle for a beater at $350K with a large garage and decent size lot. There's a price drop at different radius' outside of city centres if you are willing to commute. For instance, I drive 25 mins to work and spent easily 75K less on my property over comparable houses/lots within the city I work in.

Have you tried looking at properties on the MLS? Here's a link; http://www.realtor.ca/propertySearch.aspx

Here's another - properties you might not find on MLS; http://propertyguys.com/

Have you considered renting until you settle in with jobs? This might give you a better opportunity to research the area/city/neighborhoods etc.

The foremost reason for this general area, is my wife has been offered a work transfer through her current employer. She is a Business Systems Manager for a Global Pump manufacturer, and they have a plant in Burlington.

So we wanted somewhere within about a 30 minute commute max. Burlington is nice, but it's pretty expensive, and there's quite a lot of tower blocks. You have to bare in mind that tower blocks in the UK are all council owned ghetto type dwellings, and it's very hard to shake that image. I know in Canada they are apartments/condos.

Not keen on Oakville, and the areas north seem to be lots of new developments with townhouses and not much character. Still nice, just not for us.

We prefer somewhere older, more established and usually more land. Stoney creek towards Grimsby looks to be a possibility. We would love a place in Ancaster, but I don't think we can afford the house we want.

But this is why I'm coming over in a couple of weeks, to really hunt around and get a feel for the place. We are uprooting our life and our family, we need to get as close to "the dream" as possible.

The Dream:

3-5 bedroom  Detached house, with double garage (or space for one) and a full basement (un-finished preffered). Would like enough land for a small car collection and maybe an RV. Budget between 250K and 350K

Are we asking too much?

 Thanks Gearhead.

Yes, I've been looking at the MLS every day for nearly two years. I've even noticed some houses back up for sale since we first started looking, lol.

Wife's work are providing a rental for the first three months, so we'll have time then to decide if we are going to buy or rent, and where.

A cummute time of up to 30 minutes is fine for her.

30 mins out of Burlington would get you to Guelph, Milton, Cambridge, Toronto and possibly to St. Catharines depending on traffic/ weather and choice of route. Talking city limit to city limit of course.

Wife plans to start early finish early, to help avoid traffic. Everyone in her work does that, and it also helps with communicating with head office in UK (5 hours ahead).

I have to jump in here to boost Vineland. 1/2 hr to Burlington. 8 minutes to St Catharines. Laid back community. Your price range will net you a pretty nice place here. Check out Larry's site for listings: http://www.bilko.ca/
