No troubles. Larry's a good guy to work with, known him for years, lives local. That Lincoln I mentioned? - 2009, 160,000 klm, all wheel drive when needed, asking $16,500 but I know he'll take less. Once you're here if you want to have a look/drive it's at my place and I have the keys.
I commute from Niagara to Beamsville daily, only 20 minutes or so, except for long weekends when everyone heads for the bridges to shop US. The area from Stoney Creek to St. Catharines is a great place ........lots to choose from and everything is within range, Shopping, theaters, college's and university's. From Buffalo to Oshawa is now almost one big residential area anyway......... Glad to see you are shopping carefully and weighing the options before you make your move. Things are definitely slower the further you get from Toronto, and the prices drop accordingly. That being said, i would opt for the top of the escarpment, towards Smithville, the prices are starting to rise, but the extra 10 minutes commute will get you a much larger property for the same money.
I would be very interested to see how life is out in the sticks.
Burlington and Hamilton and St catherines is NOT in the sticks That the CITY Sir
I think he ment for use country folks in Vineland Beamsville area... but you are soooo right...Toronto is more of a "Province", or country depending where you are from in the world
Theres country folk there? Thank God !! I just thought it was all 4 lane and cities Dave will love it there Wait until you tell him that southern ontario is bigger than Scotland lol lol lol lol
Our winters are mild Dave compared to what they were. You want to see the "sticks",check out www.mls.ca Aylmer/Sparta/Simcoe/Delhi/Tillsonburg Ontario. Welcome to CANADA , eh. John

I can't argue that. I was a Sales Manager for a company that will remain un-named and traveled all through Ontario's Sunny Coast. You're right, the winters were a b*tch, but the summers........no better place to be, sun, sandy beaches, Lake Erie, bikinis, hot-rods...........
Welcome from a little east of your new home!!!! I sure wished I would have been as smart as you to get to know some guys before I moved here not that I'm complaining Oakville is fine but I think you will find a lot more car guys in Hamilton,Burlington and area than here and the home prices there are a lot better too.I hope you buy something quickly so you will have time for garage tours and a few wobble pops with all your new freinds
Welcome. I've always wanted to visit Scotland. My ancestors built Rosslyn Chapel. I wonder if I'd get a VIP parking spot near the door if I visited it?
Almost got rid of the 20 years of junk from the loft and garage, lol.
Save some snow for me!
Well Dave, luckily you will get here at the end of Feb., so winter will nearly be done with. But have no doubt, there likely still will be snow. Being a new-comer to this country from Scotland, mark my words, you will regret that last statement "Save some snow for me!", LOL. Every Scotchman I know, or from the UK in general, complain about how cold it is here. It takes a few years to get somewhat accustomed to it. Snow is an expensive "commodity", LOL, with it comes, SNOW boots, SNOW coats, SNOW tires, SNOW shovels, SNOW brush, etc...
Trust me, you'd rather have 4 months of cold and snow
I did fool you Its Russia
Damn, I was gonna say Russia too. Can tell be the nasty lines on the Eastern Block estate car.
There's a lot of stupid pictures floating about Facebook at the moment claiming to be Canada. One of them shows a line of cars driving through a channel of snow about 15 foot deep. But the cars are driving on the left!
Sorry to sound like a doom and gloomer, but with 2 inches of snow early this morning, it took me 2 hours to drive from Brantford to Oakvile this morning...75 kms!
So true, city streets turn to grease. We live in a rural community but work in the city and always joke that if we can get out of the city, we can get home.
I'd rather drive through deeper snow than the city slush. Whiteouts and ice are only driving concern I have living in the sticks. It takes me 25 minutes to get to work in clear weather, 30 mins in bad weather. Then again, I dont have the GTA and GH highways/commute to deal with.

Good luck with the move. Lookin forward to meeting you at the area shows and cruises Dave. Snow in Hamilton is nothing to look forward to, sorry to say. All it takes is a centimetre and it causes absolute kaos. People don't know how to drive here. Three hours north of here they'll be blanketed in snow for months on end and take it as a regular day at the beach. You'll see soon enough. Sorry to sound like a doom and gloomer, but with 2 inches of snow early this morning, it took me 2 hours to drive from Brantford to Oakvile this morning...75 kms!

It's the same in the UK, an inch of snow and it's a national disaster. Not looking forward to your ice rain at all.
Kev, we are still trying to sort out a place to live. We have just sold our house in Scotland, so we WILL be able to buy quickly, but until then we have a few hurdles:
1: We need a short term lease, but so far everyone wants a year
2: We need a place that will allow a dog
3: We need a place in Ancaster so the kids are in the right catchment area for school (don't want to have to move them again)
After yesterday, and watching the shipping guys pack all our stuff, I would rather not have to do that again. We are allowed storage for three months, so if we can just find a wee place that will put us up for a month, that would be perfect.
I already spoke to Glen about trucks when I get there. I'll be looking at a cheap truck, up to $3000, and the F150 looks to be a decent option. I may need to try them all before I settle on one though, lol. Insurance for us fresh imports is a killer for the first year. Could be $4000 EACH, but looks like it goes down by half after a year. I need a crew cab/extended cab for the family.
Oh, talking of the dog, here's a canine "WTF?" moment:
Hi Dave, you still looking to buy a house? I take possession of my new house in Niagara Falls tomorrow and have not sold my house in Stoney Creek. ( about 20 minute drive to Ancaster) I have a view of lake ontario, 80 x 150 lot, 3 bedroom home with triple attached garage and a 1200 sq. ft free standing garage. I can be out by your arrival if you want to buy. I can post link to virtual tour if you are interested. Thanx, Kevin
Dave, I can't say for sure that we're going to save you some snow, but if you look at the weather forecast in the wee hours of the morning for today Feb.8, we're getting 15-25cm of white stuff overnight. That should make for a nice commute to work in the morning.

Yes, I've been watching your weather reports with much interest. Looks like Nova Scotia is going to get wiped out, lol.
They're used to it on the east coast, just a way of life, like rain in B.C. Don't know if you've found a place yet but here's a link for rentals in Hamilton/Ancaster :

Would be nice to see some video of the blizzard, but I've been looking online for 20 minutes and there's nothing. Do you not get a live news feed online there?
We just have to step out our door for live video in real time virtualy we don't need to see on the tube........SUCKS BIG TIME.. Looks like about 4 hrs on the tractor and blower to0morrow for us snow belt guys..and I don't have a cab for my tractor or hydralics to adjust the shute..but no sense going out till it stops..and to think last week wed we had no snow..hope this is march and Feb combined and we april weather in two weeks..yeah...
Is it safe to come over yet? or is it still a touch frosty out? lol
Two weeks tomorrow and we will be Canadian residents!
and today we received the good news that our Permanent Residency application has been approved.
Sooooo, I need a truck. I have a budget of up to 3K, and I fancy a Ford F150 Crew cab. Seen a few on Kijiji, but if anyone knows of a decent truck for sale then give me a shout.
Will also need advice on where to get it safetied, e-tested etc, but I'll deal with that when the time comes.
Welcome to Canada! I build cars with Grumpsbodyworks and we both live in Burlington.
We know lots of people who can hook you up with used cars, Insurance, show you around etc... It's funny, I'm Irish and I hate football & Soccer...But I like to drink.
You will have to message us when you arrive so we can all meet up.
