Hey guys, I'm looking to score an amp or receiver on the cheap. It's for my shop, so appearances aren't important, but should be in good working condition(I need another project like I need a hole in the head). I would prefer something older and not surround sound, but beggers can't be choosers so I'll look at anything at this point. It should have a couple of inputs for the CD/DVD, Satellite and I pod, but there are ways around it if inputs are limited.
A pair of mid size speakers would be nice as well, but not a deal breaker (I don't think bookshelf speakers will live too long in a 36x 72' shop - I play it loud!).
Let me know through a reply here or a PM if you've got something stashed in the corner gathering dust and I'll consider it - not looking to make me poor, please keep this in mind (I don't need McIntosh or Carver stuff for the shop, but hey...if it's cheap....
Thanks in advance - Fordy

Hey Fordy, just a suggestion. I got an ipod dock from the apple store which I think was about $40. It comes with a little remote. It sits on top of a NAD amp that I got off kijiji and it sounds great with some Boston Acoustic ceiling speakers also found on kijiji. The dock also charges the ipod and the remote works from quite a distance.
Thanks. Yeah, I should really consider a dock because the charge doesn't last much more than a day on the Iphone or Ipod when I'm just plugged in to RCAs through the headphone jack, but we're taking baby steps here. Amp/receiver first, then I can go from there. Most of the time I run off the satellite for commercial free music or the occasional NASCAR race. Plus I just switched over to the Samsung S4 for my phone, but still have two older Ipods and my Iphone4 to use a docking station.I think I can leave My Samsung plugged into the wall for power and run the tunes at the same time using the headphone jack/RCAs.
Thanks for the tip! -Fordy

you don't need big speakers today. i am not an audiophile but i like my tunes in my shop-cars-boat-house-etc-etc. the phrase (I don't think bookshelf speakers will live too long in a 36x 72' shop - I play it loud!) is passe today. i am old school and thought the same way for years also. when i built my shop 8-9 years ago i had it wired for everything and then some. its not quite as big as yours, 30x50x16 to the ceiling. i have been buying all my entertainment stuff off a small local guy for years, red ball radio, and when it was time for the tunes end of the building he suggested i use paradigm speakers, 14"x8"x13" approx and i too was also skeptical. he gave me a set to try, he was right. i have 2 much bigger ones that i had and the 2 small ones in the back corners all about 2ft from the ceiling. if you want good tunes with volume don't be afraid of the paradigm's.
and just recently visiting a buddy up alliston way who is an audiophile of sorts i seen what he was using and was surprised to say the least. he was using bose cube speakers albeit in a smaller space. their about the size of a 1150 holly carb for a reference. anyway, music sound is a personal choice and i am just throwing this out there.
Thanks Shag, I've actually got a set of Paradigms in my living room in the house - good....then I built a pair of stands to get them off the floor - Better.....but while they sound nice and 'clean' and can handle some decent power, the 6" woofers just don't pound enough for me. So I dialed out some of the bass in stereo mode and added a powered sub - best! I should try this set up out in the shop for a day and see if it will work in a large x huge room - It sounds fantastic in the living room. I've also got a JVC surround system in the Family room with small speakers and a powered sub woofer and it sounds great too, but once again... in a small room.
In my other shop (36x50) I've got the satellite hooked up to my 30 yr old Yamaha amp running through a pair of 'Monitor 18s' and let me tell you - for a 30 yr old 35x2ch amp running equally old 18"woofers, two mids and four tweeters in each cabinet....IT ROCKS!!!
I'm chatting with a guy on Kijiji about an older (older than mine!) Yamaha Receiver at a good price, now I just need some decent speakers. They don't need to be as huge as the monitor 18s, but they should be able to handle some power if I forget my age and really start rockin' out there! Lol!
Thanks again - Steve

Steve,
I have a partial suround system collecting dust in my basement. I can shoot some pic's after work and send them to ya.
There is a power sub and three other speakers. This is from a Panasonic system my kid gave me a few years ago. I use a couple of the speakers in my garage with my old sterio receiver.
Thanks 58!!! I'm going to temporarily move my surround system from my living room into the shop to try it out and hear if it sounds OK in such a big space. If I find it satisfactory, I may just take you up on your offer!
