Sounds like a great time. LOL. Sometimes if I don't get the answer I want at the license office, I go to a different one. They don't always give the same answer. It's worked in my favour before.
Town I live in only has 1........ next closest one is in North Bay......about 45min drive. I got same answer when I called two other ones...... Just livin the dream up here in the north.

Bought a truck from Alberta for my lovely daughter. My brother was kind enough to drive it back for me so it was put in his name for the drive home.
When I went to license it I get the miserable gov face telling me
You have to have it weighed as they do not put weight of vehicles on Alberta ownership's
I ask why cant they just use weight of truck on door/tag????
No!!! you have to get it weighed.
OK.......can I transfer it and get a trip permit on it to drive to scales?
NO!!!!
So I will have to pay to have it towed to scales and then pay to have it weighed?
Not my problem how you get it weighed!!
Thank you very much and have a nice day while I mumble "miserable sh*thead" under my breath.
So of course I'm really not into paying $150 to have it towed to scales and then pay to get it weighed blah blah blah Against hubbies better judgement.....I decided to go redneck rouge.
I call my neighbour and tell him to get his might get thrown in jail clothes on, jump in my Ford and follow me in said dodge truck to scales. (I grabbed some plates on the way out the door)
Drive there in dodge........neighbour follows me in my Ford.....scale/weight truck....All is well. And then the truck stalls.
Nice shiny Western star waiting to scale....I tell him "relax, I'm sure you have seen a Ford push a stalled dodge before!
I tell neighbour, Don't scratch my chrome grille guard......but push the dodge off scales and out of the way.
Grab paperwork for truck now weighed, jump in my Ford and drive home!
Call Griffiths and tell them I need truck towed home. Give address/directions. Don't know where it is they say.
I'll drive over to shop and you can follow me to scales By the way.....How much???? That will be $85.00 dollars please.
Hubby just txt to see how everything went........ Damn don't answer that!
Sounds like a great time. LOL. Sometimes if I don't get the answer I want at the license office, I go to a different one. They don't always give the same answer. It's worked in my favour before.
just thinking out loud here ........ if you werent able to transfer the ownership then it would still be in your brothers name wouldnt it? couldnt you have just driven to the scales with it still in his name (with tags and insurance still listed as being with him)?

My bro doesn't live here or close, he has his plates with him as we didn't know what a sh*tshow this would be. I've transferred many vehicles but never one from out of province.
I'll know if there is a next time.
I'll get it done (easy or hard)......its for my daughter so just have to wear my big girl ass kickin boots I guess. Just really p*sses me off as soon as you have to get involved with gov. it becomes a circus!
humph, interesting. newer truck obviously, couldn't they just run the vin # and come up with the manu stats. what if it had larger tool box or work platform on it, who pays the diff. when you go for emmision test they enter vin and it comes back what it is, can't they. same data base, mto. i know i have had to stand up to them before when they wanted an appraisal to transfer to me from the states, car though. told them if this is what the value was i payed the feds at the border i don't need an appraisal. there was a bit of a commotion when i stood up to them aggressively then someone checked and i was right. -might be a different story maybe, if it was a u.s. first registered truck but not a canuck one. the weight could be out 200lbs do to fuel weight and that would alter your g.v.w. rating in the end. when they issue a ticket for over load its on your g.v.w. sticker or axle rating on the sticker on the spot -humph-again. it would of been interesting here in the belleville bureau if it was me. sorry for the b.s. that you are going through up there.

Sorry you had a bad day but it makes for a great story. Thanks for sharing it ,I think we have all been there at one time or another and share your frustration. Ed
I feel your pain Janice. I went through this a couple years ago trying to beat the HST - remember way back when we only paid one tax on a used vehicle?
Anyway, I imported an old Econoline from USA and paid the federal tax at the border, but when I went to put it in my name, they wanted it weighed. I explained that it's a non running project and has no front suspension and wouldn't be the right weight anyway. She didn't care, so it's not in my name years later. I can't wait for them to ask why I waited so long to register it.

Sounds like the "crap" I went through to get the Acadian ownership correct. If I have no results at the Aylmer MTO (gov run) I go to St thomas ,which has a 'privately run' Licenceing Office. And much friendlier too!!!!

Fords Rule ! If it ain't designed and manufactured in North America it sucks ! I don't do rice, pasta, fish and chips, sauerkraut, Ikea or other third world motor vehicle !
I had to do the same thing with my first truck from Illinois. They wouldn't take the original ownership weight for their records, they thought it had been modified. The only modifications were the missing floor and cab corners!
I changed a Alberta truck over just 6 months ago with no problem, i had to get an appraisal for sales tax only with bill of sale from the Alberta Ministry, i was in and out of there in 10 minutes........
the only thing they were puzzled with they had never heard of a Ford Econovanup 350......... lol
it was a concept vehicle, only 3 were produced and my mine was a Ford Promotion Give-Away Vehicle, found it on kijiji
Had a friend that had one somewhat similar. His didn't have the sliding door. His has a wide body bunk molded to the cab and was a dually. Think it was a Centurion Conversion. Used it to haul a 5th wheel trailer.

I would be complaining to someone
if the truck was in your brothers name and he signed it over then you are entitled to a trip permit unless he gave it to you as unfit
once it is unfit you cant get a trip permit
I brought a truck in from the states and had no issues
me thinks you had a moron who hates his job workin for you that day
Alberta trucks don not require safeties in that province.
The issue is the weight of truck was not on ownership like they are here in On.
Janice
partially right janice. the weight on the ownership here is what you pay to license up to. the more weight you want the more the license costs but you still can't go over your manufacturer's stats. for personal use 1/2 to 1 ton trucks all you need is the manu stats dry weight which they will have on record or you can take it in with you. on the ownership of my dually the weight is at manu dry weight but it is not proper as it is in the company name which makes it commercial. i am theoretically over loaded when i put in fuel. at the end of the day no truck can exceed the manu r-g-w rating.

ps, its been awhile since i have been into this stuff but i think i will be close.
