Spent about 3 hrs on the tractor this afternoon cleaning up the lot and the lane way shoveling around the doors I was sweating like crazy in my snowsuit and bala-clava.. (muslim mask) It was almost like rain, the snow was wet and heavy. First time I cleaned up the lot since I shut down for Christmas on the 20th..Lookin out my window she is snowing so bad I can hardly see the shop from the house and the weather chanel says it's going to be like -34 or some silly number like that here..Times like this I am glad I have a little non shedding dog..miniature schnzuzer , body temp about 100 and gets right in under the blankets if I let him, hotter than the wife.. confuse OOOOPPPSS I mean for heat ..disbelief  no so between the three of us we should keep warm hope you guys and can't forget our Janice get through storm o.K. stay safe..

Only 15cm's or so for us here, with a breeze, so it will be blowin around a bit. Temps then will drop, but by next weekend we're back up to 0c again, same as this weekend.

Weather is good here in Trenton. Couple of degrees above 0C. Just a light dusting of snow. Now as for plowing the driveways... Might do that tomorrow??

Several inches of snow have fallen in the last 4 - 5 hours or so ...on the edge of raining . Sure glad I don't have to go out tomorrow as there is sure to be an ice problem with the temps down to -11 by morning . Hope nobody's power goes out .

I shoveled the deck off for the dogs at 3 and it has 2 inches on it now and still snowing. I just got an email from work calling a snow event for tonight so all the trucks will be out at 2am.

It's heavy stuff, we just had a bit of a break, so I went out and ran the snow-blower and cleared the driveway as well as my neighbours.
It started snowing again before I got done, by the time I finished my neighbours and got back home, I had an inch in my driveway.cry

The wife already shoveled once before that. Now it feels like freezing rain.

This winter is certainly one of the worst in the last few years, and there seems to be no signs of a break anytime soon.

At least the blower is earning it's money.wink

We went to visit friends in Dayton OH on the weekend. Sunday evening 7PM it was 38*F (3*C), and this morning at 7AM it was -21*F (-19*C) Didn't think the temp could drop that fast, plus the wind chill. I75 up to Detroit was like a parking lot. Averaged about 30mph with wall to wall ice. At that temp, salt is useless. Roads much better in Canada.

Anybody else have any of those ,frost quakes, big bangs that sound like explosions an actually shake some houses.Science says they are caused by melting water seeping under ground then suddenly freezing.Evidently the ice expands and causes the quake or shake.Wierd thing ,I never heard of them before, and I have scene a few bad winters, but this is something new to me. Ed, those "Bangs" as they are refered to are very common were the temps go way down.

This winter being colder, with frost going deeper has created a whole lot of "WTF was that?" from people in the south.

Same thing happens on lakes as the ice expands, during cold temps, common to hear big booms or rumbles.

I am familiar with the sound of ice cracking cause my wife is from the Orillia area and surrounded by lakes.Ray,you are right those kind of cracks sure get your attention when you are out on the ice.But this is the first I or others in this area ,Cobourg/Port Hope ,have heard them . We keep thinking its more trees coming down.Wierd winter so far. Ed

Those bangs took me by surprise also, I knew exactly what they were, growing up in Timmins and then spending a few years in Edmonton, I was no stranger to hearing them.
But I kinda forgot about them, living in southern Ontario for some 20 yrs.
They are certainly not common here.

BTW ,apparently we don't refer to "cold" any more ....Expert Doppler Weather Radar Folks call it " Arctic Vortex " ....yeah they can stick that where the sun don't shine .

Didn't get much snow or ice this time but lots of rain Sunday night, so much that it flooded the garage. Spent most of the day cleaning up the water and ice, having the car on hoist helped some, just water everywhere, never had it happen before in 20 years living here. Don't have much slope and with all the ice built up on the driveway just no place for the water to go when it melts!

you know what guys, its winter and we live in canada. growing up in the 50's-60's you got up and dealt with it. you knew it was going to be cold, snowy, wet or windy because the evening news told you that maybe it will be. today with all the news and weather channels having to fill their screens and time frames it gets put way out of proportion. mom still had to yell at us to come in for lunch or supper. growing up on a farm i didn't know my name wasn't "get-wood" till spring.
--cold- 1976-77 driving truck on a steady toronto to vancouver run, 3 times a month, just outside cornwall alberta in the middle of the night at -35f or so at 60mph the truck literally froze up and quit. we got a ride into calgary with another truck and waited 2 days for them to thaw ours out.
--cold- late 90's snowmobiling in the cochrane area and its -30 to -40f when you get up in the morning and you still have 2 days travel at 60-70mph back to your truck in north bay. another sled trip just outside chapleau hurrying up to get into town at 7-8pm in the middle of nowhere and it is thunder-lightning and pouring rain as good as any summer storm in jan-feb?.
--the point i am making guys is its canada and sh!ts going to happen and we grew up dealing with it. today the way they sensationalize this stuff to fill screens and time frames people either don't go out or if they do they are scared.

just me

ps; don't even mention how easy it is for the schools to call a day off, snow, rain, fog, etc-etc. i don't know how we got this old and far, its canada for crying out loud and we should be happy and proud to live here.

Good post Shag, and yes i have to agree also with Chuck, as the older we get, the more we feel the cold, and dislike winter.
Over the years it seems that people have become so vulnerable to cold winters, many don't even have proper clothing anymore, they click their remote start, the car is warm when they get in, windows melted off,and away they go again to their job.
Just look around, how many people do you see today, still wearing running shoes, no hat, and a pair of those useless little thin gloves.
Hear on the news this morning that S.Ont. is colder than we have, -40c chill factor, both in TO, and even down to Texas.
Also heard the mayor of Indy in Indiana, has passed a quick law that it is now illegal for people to drive, untill this passes.

(This is just an old fashioned winter that many of us grew up in.)

This old guy can hardly remember those cold days and as you say if you lived in Rural ont back then it's true it just seemed like it was winter..We did not grow up with iphones stuck to face and sat on our butts in the house playing games on our x-box..We were out-side every day and got climatized ,I lived just outside of Ottawa, Stittsville we never had any school bus's and had to walk about 4 miles to school in winter..no running shoes, I had a paper route in the country I picked up my papers at the local general store after school and my rounte on my way home winter or summer had to be done..I don't think I felt the cold as much ..I gotta admit I am a bit of a wussy now..and I am spoiled or aged ..I guess age spoile me anyway come on spring I hate the cold now and I am freaking out what my hydro-bill is going to look like next month ..Thanks Dalton And mC-gwynne..I hope you both freeze to death in the dark with a solar panel stuck up your A$$
