Opinions/experience on my 1949 dodge.

So, I've got my old '49 a present. Neigbour gave me a dual intake manifold that was sitting in his garage for the past 40 years or so, nice edmunds aluminum number.

 

My '49 is bone stock, and I've been thinking to keep it that way, or if I make mods, make them all period correct. I don't mind finding another exhaust manifold, splitting the manifold etc,

but I got thinking, on these old mopars there have to be enough folks out there with experience who've been here before.

 

Is it even worth the bother to put dual carbs an open up the exhaust? I know it would wake my car up a bit, but I figure there's gotta be someone with firsthand experience? 

 

So, anyone done this on their old mopar L-head? worth it?

Haven't done that, but the intake is a pretty rare item.

Have you checked other sites? ("Inliners International") is a good start.

We used to have a saying; Spaghetti rods and cheese bearings.

You will be fine as long as you keep the rpm's down.

It will work real good, I did it with a chev 235 many years ago, still got about the same mileage and the split manifold with dual cherry bombs sounded great.

The cool factor alone is worth the effort and is still reversable if you don't like it,go for it.A 6 with duals always sounds great. Ed

Thats funny,
My dad always referred older Dodges especially with the automatics as soft crank sixes with sump pump trannys...
The 49 would certainly gain a whole new level of cool with split exhaust and dual carbs on the flatty, go for it..

 I think so. Ill keep the stock manifold rebuild both the carbs. My trick with this car is no out of age mods. except safety. I might get brakes.

 

Aslo would like a 51-52 overdrive. Now to think a ltitle bit about exhaust.. trush alywas was a thought.

 Its very true. any reccomendations. right now the car has one on the back. I was thinkgin a could of "glasspacks" in the middle, could always put somethin on back to quiet it up.

 Brakes are always good! ...and usually an exceptable upgrade even on a traditional build, along with a 12 volt electrical system for brighter lights. They have modern alternators available in an old school generator housing.

If anyone can tell me the distance between the far two intake ports on the long block L-head engines, that'll be handy.

 

Trying to figure out if they guy gave me a shortie intake or a long one.   Pardon the pics, hopped up on plainkillers. :(

From an ad guaranteeing to work on the larger block My measurement So, It will fit. :) Time to save up for some manifolds.

 

 The manifold casting measures 19 5/8" at the maximum length (excluding water tube). 

The carb mounts are 8 1/4" apart (center to center) and each have two threaded studs 3" apart. 

The manifold has three ports and the outer two measure 16 1/2" across (center to center), the middle port measures 8 1/4" distance from either of the outers (measured center to center).

Wondering, is the intake manifold you got water heated. If not it will need a heat source to run correctly?

I have a 49 Plymouth with the American 23 inch long six. The engine has dual Carter carbs on a vintage aluminum intake manifold. headers going through Smitty mufflers, a mild cam and a finned aluminum cylinder head. The best change that I made was installing an over drive trans from a 54 Plymouth. Front brakes are disc and the car has 3" dropped spindles. You will not scare anyone with the cars acceleration but the wow factor at a car show is great, it sounds good and is a blast to drive. The manifold you have is probably for the short engine as very little was made for the long one. If I knew how to post photos of the car I would do so but the process has always been a mystery to me.

Awesome. From my measurements the manifold is for the long engine. We'll see when I pull off the other one for Cleaning and R&R

 That OD is something i'm interested in, and eventually disc brakes. Mostly I'd like to be able to just have a little more oomph and the higher mph cruising ability the OD gives you.

Yeah, can't complain. I guess I could clean it up some, that manifold.

I kind of like a patina on my parts, so a degrease and maybe a pass or two on the polish wheel.

Got some 6v h4 bulbs, they are VERY bright. My 6v system is getting there, I may do a 6v alternator for a bit better juice, have been eying one up that's in a generator housing.

 

I know 12v switch makes the most sense, but I want to keep some of the charms of the old girl.
