I think Tapcon has been conning us all these years. I ran out of them today and asked a nearby HVAC guy if he had any. He said "we just use #12 screws". I said "that works?". He said "absolutely". So he gave me a bunch to try and using the same Tapcon bit, they worked fantastically! The last one stripped out on me so he said "here's the next trick for you to learn". He took a short length of really narrow guage wire, like a telephone wire and put it in the hole. Then drove the number 12 screw in. It was as tight as you can imagine. All these years of Tapcon use have come to an end for me.
Used them for years, the trick was to judge the quality of concrete you were drilling to insert them,, to soft you strip the hole, to hard you break them,,just my experience..cad plated screws will rot in the concrete way faster than the tapcons,jmo...
40 years ago my dad drilled holes in the basement walls and plugged them with wood. Screwed through strapping into the wooden plugs. Still there and holding strong.

You are exactly right 31!
The 12ga screw is substantial, but it will rot faster. Also, the tapcon has dual depth threads.... Helps them bite in better.
Home Hardware stores carry a private label version that is less expensive, but unfortunately an import.

I always used wood to pack the hole in the concrete. (I'm talking PRE tap con days)It always worked well, the other option was plastic inserts. With the wood I didn't have to worry 'bout different sizes I could just whittle some wood down and I was set.It worked good. You could also buy these little things that was like a wooden tube. They were ready to use they were good but usually ran out.
Tap Cons are quick, easy and ready to go but I don't trust them at all. If I have to use Tap Cons I use twice as many of them.
