The problem with hydro costing us so much money is because we own so much more electrical crap than they did in the 50's and we need so much more of it. I bet the average household today uses 20 times what they did 60 years ago. If our lifestyles today was the same as the 50s, we would all be rich.
X2 on that Hemi, just compare the size of the hydro service in use today. I also suspect the size of Ontario Hydro back then was much smaller, look at the big expensive equipment used now.
Used conservelity (Sorry Spelling,) hydro rates are not that expensive, i know people who's bills run under $100.00 per month, every month, Not bad , as that's only a touch over $3.00 per day to run things, like fridge , freezer, hot water tank, 24/7, plus other items used intermittenly.
Most homes built back then had a 60 amp service and that was more than sufficient. Today 200 amp panels are the norm. Kinda says something right there !!

If every consumer in Ontario cut Hydro use by 1/2, Hydro would whine and cry because they wouldnt be making enough money to pay their bills so they would have to raise rates to compensate. Consumers will never win this one. Even if you stop using hydro you would still get a "minimum " bill.

They have already done that, a few years ago. We "Conserved" to much, so they had to "Raise rates to pay the bills".....****in crooks

That happened when they put "smart meters" on the water here, the usage dropped so much, they raised the rates...............and still had less income, and wasted millions on installing the meters....................

They did the same here with the hydro smart meters . No one would sign up for their terrific deal (like the savings from the hst) So they just went around installing them . Never even Knocked on the door.

As an example, I just received my quarterly Hydro bill for the cottage (hydro has been mainly turned off during the period.) The total usage for the three months was $2.77. The billing, after the 10% Ontario Clean Energy Benefit discount was $81.94.
Thankfully my house and garage are totally off grid so my Hydro bill for the same period was $0.00.
