Car Shows ………………...

I'm just wondering why car shows seem to charge the car owners to get in and not the public.  With out the cars there is no show.   What am I missing ????

Because it costs money to run a car show, and most if not all attendees have a car in the show.

There are "car shows" and there are cruise-ins.
I did my share of car shows for years. Now I go to the cruise-ins.
Much easier going, no cleaning, polishing, etc. At the end of the day, I drive home.

It's similar to racing, the racers put on the show, without them there would be no show, but they still have to pay to get in and race.

That's why I like getting together with friends for shop nights and BBQ's. Free to get in, no little kids standing on your fenders, only people you like come and you can drink beer without getting busted.

Of course spectators have to pay to get in. I'm saying the racers put on the show, but they still have to pay to get in , and also pay to race.
Allowing spectators free entry into a car show doesn't make sense.

That's what I mean.  You pay to show the car and the public gets in free.

Most shows, the public and the participants both pay to get in.....The participants is usually a bit more, which doesnt seem fair, but there are usually goody bags etc for participation. Plus, you get a good parking spot. If they charge too much to show your car, you will find that the best part of the car show is in the general public parking lot

due to these being public events the promoter must carry a liability insurance

and pay a fee to use the space. I cant see that being cheap for a one or two day event.

And the only thing certain at this time anyway's , we will pay to show our cars.

You would think in this day and age we would cruise like the 60's and 70's  from hot spot to hot spot

There would alway's be car guy's at one of the local Harvey's or country style's

Moparfest, but you get a chance to win a car, this year a '69 Satellite drop top, aside from all the other participant prizes, a trip for two the Barrett-Jackson's in Scottsdale (nice winter break), and also a trip for two to the Daytona 500.

Dan, I just looked through Old Auto's  & Classics on Kent in Lindsay is $20 at the gate [$15 pre Reg] another up coming show at autoworkers union hall in Oshawa is $30 + 2 or 3 more I didn't wright down!!! IMOP this is getting too steep to drive to a show then get "whacked' $20 to $30 to enter!!  Charity or not, when on a 'fixed" income & no work pension to add to Oasp & CPP makes you think twice about what show I "may be able to go to!!!   Pete

Never been to the Lindsay show, so I can't comment on it. Autofest is pricy, but it's a 3 day show and it includes a t-shirt and very good odds on winning some of the good give aways.

Seems like everyone is getting into the "car show" act Legions, VFWs, service clubs that have no vested interest in the sport so there must be money to be made. Goody bags full of advertising and a pen, Plunketts didn't even get a pen and got parked in a paddock full of horse s**t. Some shows are better than others but more and more the show organizers are taking advantage of our sport. This year I've deleted over a dozen events from my calendar using the CTC Sunday night cruise in as my good time benchmark.

Those are basically the reasons why, this will be my last year as part of the Moparfest committee. I initially joined because of the fundraising, it was great 25 years ago...then all kinds of other clubs want their share, boy scouts, girl guides, cadets, legion, optimists, MAD....

Oh! And lets not forget the township, they want there share, they are even making up new charges, like "event fees"  (new last year),etc...So I asked the township's mayor;

"Which charity would you like us to take the money away from?".

It's got to the point, were we have to charge the higher fees to cover the expenses, and maybe donate a few bucks, after all is done.

Over the years, our donation went from about 30% of funds to 10% of funds, once all is paid.

Rant over,

Since we're all venting about car shows, here my beef. Why in the hell do we need such a high Police presence at car shows, specifically Autofest ?? I don't want to see these wanna-be Cowboys walking around in their riot gear at car shows !! There's no need for it !! US car shows have cops there, but only for directing traffic. never once have I ever seen a US cop just walking around intimidating people.
This past weekend at the Golden Beach car show, they had the other wanna-be Cowboys from Hydro one there showing off their assault vehicle they use to protect the Darlington nuke plant. These guys looked like a bunch of morons showing off their riot gear and replica guns. They even had kids putting on bullet proof jackets and holding these realistic looking handguns so that their stupid parents could snap a picture of them. Sorry, but wrong place to display that kind of hardware. It really made me feel like Ontario is in fact a Police state. My 2cents.

Gazoooo Said..

"Which charity would you like us to take the money away from?".

Sounds a lot like a blog on our life going forward under the Liberal Government..I have found that there is no sense getting your shorts in a knot ..I resent paying to take my car out for a Charity even and then being the one to contribute to the Charity beside risking my car getting damaged..I don't think most of these events have any insurance that will cover your car if it gets damaged at the event ..That would fall back to my insurance So I guess my entry fee would only cover a spectator getting injured ..It is the cost in general of all of these expenses surrounding the hobby..Price of fuel is just nuts, insurance is becoming more and more of a Hassel and as Gazoo said every body wants a piece of the pie..

It's the same when your shopping any more, Every friggen store now asks before you can pay if you want to donate to some thing or other, doesn't matter if it's the pet store ,grocery store, hardware store, everybody  wants to pick your pocket, pretty hard to get into a store without being accosted at the door by some body selling $2. chocolate bars for $5.

I noticed in town they had the fire department out collecting in town before you could cross the bridge ..Canadian Tire has the Fill the cruiser sitting at the door so you have sneak by to get in..Which we as tax payers are paying these $100,00 dollar cops to stand there all day holding people up for money. They have a way of making you feel dirty if you don't..Franlky my Dear.."I am sick of it"

I hardly go to any of those shows any more..I have paid about all I going to pay..I just like to take a Sunday drive with the old girl and skip most of the shows, old age means less income to throw away..

I do not hold any Ill-will against those volunteers trying to collect for a charity They are not pocketing the money .. it's a sign that times are tough and going to get a lot tougher Now that the Public sector has supported the liberals..Just you wait and watch how bad it's going to get most of those Public sector Unions that supported the liberals are going to be looking for another 6% increase..Police, firemen. city workers, Hydro, municipal workers, pensions ...need I say more..It is not the car show promotors that are responsible .. If it eats away at you you can make choices about limiting which you think you would like to support and some are worthy causes that do some real good in their local community..and just skip the rest..there are no shortage of charity car shows looking for your money..I do respect the volunteers who really work their ass off to help to support those really important small events, like when a person is homeless due to some unforeseen tragedy and there plenty in todays economic climate..anyway that's the view from my eyes..smile

My Buddies all went to Minden on the weekend for a show. It was advertised in Old Autos with no mention of entry fee. So the get there and are charged $12.00 for the passenger and thought this wasn't to bad and seemed fair. So they go to register their rides and were informed that that would be $35.00 thanks you very much. Needless to say they all packed up and left. Go figure probably 60 or 70 bucks in fuel there and back plus plus I don't really blame them. So they just went on a side trip to Lindsay and area and enjoyed the rest of the day followed by a cruise night in Barrie. Minden is not on the list any longer. We have paid up to $40.00 bucks to enter a show but it has always been for charity and always a good venue with entertainment. These little shows with nothing to offer are definitely going to die a slow death. I just find myself jumping in my ride now and rolling hard with no particular place to go...lolbiggrinbiggrin

one thing people dont realize is that timmies home depot ctc and other are given the donation credit. to you and I it may be a loonie or toonie but it is big for them.sorry to wander off topic just to many with charity donations guilt tripping us.the administration fees leave a paltry amount for the actual cause.back to my meds

I have the Car Show issue solved. My wife keeps me too busy around the house to even think about my car. Longest drive this year is out of the garage, 20 feet down the driveway for a wash and back in the garage. Haven,t done a thing to car this year.

So what is the point of owning it. Do you sit in the garage and look at it. In my unsolicited opinion cars are ment to be drivin. To races,to shows or for a Sunday tour. I look at the admission charges as part of the hobby. I go to shows to see my friends not to be seen.Nobody would pay to see my ride so I don't mind paying to see what others have done. Doesn't really cost that much if its your hobby. I am not a drinker so that goes into the car, or shows, or gas. Drive them as much as possible cause before long we won't be able to . Ed

When you look at the big picture, car show admission is a very small percentage of what it costs to keep our cars on the road.I don't think I spend $100 all year.

Fatchuk is right on the money on this one.

Cost of building a streetrod $20,000+
Insurance $ 600+
Gas to attend show $ 50+
Fee to enter show $ 10
Feeling of winning Doorprize of kids toy for ages 8 and over worth $10.......................... Priceless!

Having to pay to show my car in a public park while spectators got in for nothing..............Infuriating Piss off!

I have never attended a car show or cruise where the proceeds were not for some charity, generally kids or those a lot less fortunate then those of us who can afford a car that isn't for basic transportation. I have never begrudged paying that entrance fee or failed to buy a 50/50 where it was offered. The big shows like Autofest are expensive to put on but still manage to raise a lot of charitable funds. My personal favorite charities are local initiatives like the food bank or service clubs that raise funds for kids play grounds etc. keeping the money in the community. I know many here are on a pension or fixed income that never seems to keep up with rising costs but that is the unfortunate reality that costs for putting on events just keep going up. The hit in the pocket book is evident in the dropping attendance at most events due to rising personal costs like gas, insurance, upkeep etc.

i've already traded the weekend off so i'm free and booked a hotel.

i asked a good friend of mine that works the autofest show but is not a member of the club. he said all gate fees go to the charity. stuff like the fence rental and such are all covered by donations. a lot of time is put into the show. they take 1 month off after the show then a committee is set up and go full tilt for the next 11 months. as for 25 bucks for 1 night street party, 2 days at the lake and a t-shirt and mug, i'm good. i'm sure i missed some stuff but to put on that show is not cheap and most is covered by donations.
