'way back when, I was in Air Cadets at Mt. Hope. On Sundays we could go for a ride in a Harvard.
Some B-17's had engines built by Studebaker, under contract from Wright.
They have a Studebaker tag on them.
I learned to fly at the Woodstock Flying Club in 1969, where the owner of the land the club was located was Norm Beckham, a farm equipment dealer and the owner of a Harvard. Norm took me up in the Harvard and I could not believe the power and sound of that engine, especially when he changed the pitch of the propeller. That thing would almost do a vertical climb. I can still hear the sound. Sasquatch should remember that place eh Ray?
Within a couple more years there was another Harvard at the club also, I believe owned by Joe Matika?
Yup, remember that place well along with Norm Beckham, also vaguely remember Joe Matika.
Also remember Canadas oldest pilot, Tom Williams from Sweaburg.
Sasquatch, we had Tommy Williams at our annual flying club banquet where Joe Matika's son was being given his pilots license as the youngest pilot in Canada (16) Tommy got up and congratulated young Joe and told him "today you are Canada's youngest pilot and I am Canada's oldest pilot, but tomorrow I will still be the oldest and you will no longer be the youngest"
