After looking through the  "Pics to get you through the Winter" thread, I noticed a few of the drag cars had their "for sale" ads included in the post. So post up your "advertisements" of cars/trucks that you hated to see go.(or even ones you were happy to see go)

 

I'll start off with Dad's 57 2 door Hardtop "DIamondback" which he sold back in the late 60's in order to help pay for the $18,000 it took to buy an acre of land and build his and Mom's house back in 1971.

 

Here is a pic of Diamondback after Dad sold it to Donny Shellington, who then sold her to Lyle Wettlauffer(sp?)  One of these guys was visiting Dad at his new house, (shown in background behind Diamondback, when this pic was taken back sometime in or just after 1971.

 

That "Corvette Power" came from a brand new crate 365hp L76 engine that Dad bought new from Elliot Brother's Chevrolet Dealership in Woodstock. He also bought a new 4 speed trans and rearend from the same dealership.  Dad's "Southern Belle" was painted "afterhours" in the "Elliot's dealership" paint booth by a gentleman named Gary Lawrence. I remember they had to use a ladder in order to paint the roof of the car as it sits up so high.  I also remember wet-sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper, it felt like velvet, but was a key part in getting that "better than factory" paint job.  That same 1991 paint job is still looking great, good work Gary.

Many years later, when Elliots was owned by Russ Urlin, Dad's "Southern Belle" was put on display at the dealership for an event that Mr Urlin had at his dealership.

The carbed L76 365hp 327 and the Ramjet mechanical fuel injected L84 375hp 327 only differed in regards to the intake manifolds. Pic of Diamondback at the carshow that Mom and Dad hosted in the Summer of 1995. I remember it was 1995 because that was Army Basic Training Summer. I was on a weekend pass and made it home to make it to the car show.  The then owner trailered Diamondback to the show. In 1995 I have "heard" that the Maas Brothers of Bugessville owned Diamondback at the time.

 

Diamondback pictured in 2008 when Al Franklin saw Diamondback and bought her. He then contracted Dad to build Diamondback-Clone#1. Diamondback is on the trailer.

From 2008-09 again as Clone#1 os being completed. Left to Right original Diamondback, Dad's "Southern Belle" and Allen Franklins Diamondback Clone#1 with a ZZ383 GMPP crate engine.

After Dad was finished building Clone #1, Allen Franklin then sold the original Diamondback to Mr Ron Hall.  He then started to restore Diamodback, but it was decided to build a Diamondback Clone #2 with a ZZ502.  Dave "Gump" Guthrie from Woodstock was visiting Mom and I after Dad's death and he mentioned that Ron Hall(Dave brother in Law) wanted to donate the original Diamondback, back to the Schermerhorn family. I was told to meet Mr Halls son Rob in Embro with a truck and trailer.  We loaded Diamondback and a huge load of parts and brought her home. This is the pic taken after dark moments after Diamondback came home again, in the same front driveway where she sat some 43 years earlier at Dad's house that she helped to finance back in 1971. (these 2 date stamps are accurate).

I cant thank Mr. Hall and his family enough.

And a pic of Dad's final resting place North of Embro. Whenever I can, I drive "Southern Belle" (pictured on gravestone) up to Embro to visit Dad, and to show him how we are taking care of his "Baby".  Hopefully sometime soon, I can go visit Dad and show him what I've done with "Diamondback".

 

So "Cherish the Memories" and post up your old ads of your vehicles "that got away".

This was my favourite hot rod that I let go about 12 years ago. '28 Ford Faux Sedan Delivery.

5.0L Mustang motor with a 5 speed standard. Chopped solid axle, sat right, looked right, drove right!

Last I heard it lives in the States.

This picture is NOT the car that I lost out on 10 years ago, but it looks so much like it, that it could be it's twin.

A long time customer of mine (John Miner, 85 years old) in Maryland had this amazing 1932 Studebaker Dictator Sedan in his garage, covered with boxes, carpets and just basically junk, amazing paint job and still turned over and ran.

I tried for about 3 years to buy it from him, almost every other weekend at his house, drinking beer with him, shooting the proverbial and trying to buy the car.

He continued to hold his ground that he was NEVER going to sell the car, so I still continued going to his house, drinking beer, shooting the $hit with him until his death 10 years ago.

After the funeral, I was sitting at his house with his family and mainly his son and the topic came up of his possessions and he stated that he was going to go through "the junk" in the garage and sell off everything.

I then chirped up at my interest in his car and offered the money that I knew it was worth, to which he said that he probably wasn't going to sell it and would hang on to it.

I told him to please keep me in mind if he ever did decide to sell it and I would be there in an instant.

About 3 months past with no contact from him, so I drove by the house and saw the car being loaded onto a trailer in the driveway, obviously at that point I stopped in to inquire.

The son sold the car to someone who inquired about it and only got $8000.00 for it.


Needless to say, this was devastating to me, as I truly loved this car and would have loved to have brought it back to its glory, not only for the idea of what the car was, but for the man who owned it, someone who I shared stories with, beer with and camaraderie for sure.

John Miner is truly missed and was an amazing friend.


Maybe one day through my continued research, I can find the car and one day, end up with it in my possession after all.

Model A Guy, you got some nice wheels there.  Way back in the day, Dad had a 1930 Ford Coupe.  When he had it it had a 283 in it.  He had built a floor for the car as the original was rusted out.  He had a few of his friends jump up and down on this pice of heavy checker-plate metal in order to bend it into the proper shape.

. I remember Dad and Mom taking us for spin, them up front and my Brother and I back in the "rumble seat". I must have been 3 or 4 years old. This 30 Coupe ended up in Mr Allen Franklins possession as well The same guy that had bought Dad's Diamondback. Allen owned this car for a while sporting a owner reported 450hp 383. 

Allen then did a resto job and had a Horton frame installed, with a Ford 9", 4 speed GM trans with a ZZ502 crate fed by a fuel cell in where the rumble seat was.  He painted it yellow, some of you may know the car. 

After the 30 was completed, it sat too low, the oil drain bolt wqas only 1-2" off the ground.  Mr Franklin wanted Dad's expert opinion as it was believed that Horton frames made an error causing the engine to sit too low.  So the 30 coupe ended up being til-loaded to Dads shop as it was Winter, and put on the alignment rack for some measurements. 

I remember climbing behind the wheel and starting up that BBC and hearing that great idle.  I backed it out off the alignment rack and ito the other bay at Dad's shop.  Allen gave me the signal to "rev her up some", so being the teenager I was, I obliged him. I only revved it up to 3500-4000rpm each time I jazzed the gas, while Allen was laughing and elbowing Dad as they stood there, but my Dad was NOT smiling.  He was never one to do anything untoward to a customers car and was probably only thinking one thing. ABout how he would be replaceing a brand new/zero mile ZZ502 after his snot-nosed son fragged it after revving the snot out of it, right in front of the customer no less.  3500-4000rpm was very loud in the shop. I ate it up.

In 1978, when I was 20 years old, I bought a '67 Shelby GT500 from a guy in Welland. Brought it back to my parent's house in St. Catharines, started disassembly to do a restomod on it. Over the next year and a half I bought everything I could from Ford (which was most everything in those days) to restore the body and chassis. The car was in very good shape with only 37,000 on it at the time. In the summer of '79, an ad came in the Niagara Bargain Finder ... brand new 427 medium riser for sale. I called the number, he lived out by Ancaster, and wanted $2600.00. I put $1900.00 in my pocket, drove there and got totally surprised. By "new motor" he meant new in the Ford boxes, never assembled. The only parts missing were a cam, lifters, push rods and valve springs. I laid the cash on the table and he said no...$2000.00 !!! I took everything except 1 head and returned the next day with the other $100.00.

My then fiancé and I took a trip to see a college friend that was living down by Blenheim Ontario on a farm with her husband. He and I took a trip into Chatham to Barrie Poole's house. Barrie wanted $200.00 plus parts to assemble the 427, which was a bargain even back then from the best FE builder in the world. His Thunderbolt was in his garage at that time...boy was it nice.

I got married in late August of that year and in 1983...you know...sold everything! Turns out she wasn't quite the car girl she seamed to be before we got married.

The motor went to Winnipeg for a Cobra kit car. The body and all the parts went to Toronto.

I've been kicking myself in the A*& everyday since then. You all know what it would be worth today.

And I still remember the serial number...67402F7A00708!!
