I have almost 40 old style 48" fluorescent ceiling fixtures with the old ballasts in both my garage and factory. I do not want to spend hundreds of $$$$ to buy new electronic ballasts nor do I want to buy new fixtures.
So I was thinking about removing the tubes and ballasts and then buy some white plastic light socket bases and maybe use 2-3 per 4' fixture with light bulbs.
Any one have any other lighting ideas for a garage?

I removed (from two-car residential garage), five 48" double bulb florescent fixtures and installed four of those cheap plastic, single, regular socket type fixtures (typically used by builders when lighting an unfinished basement), then screwed in four of the cfl, 100 w equivalent, curly bulbs in the bright white or cool white or whatever they call the really bright ones.
Works fine for my application.
I should add, I built a loft over the entire garage, so my ceiling is lower than most.

If it was me, I would just buy new fixtures. The new ones are a lot more energy efficient and give a better light so yo can see your work. Think TSC has them on sale.
I went the same route as Pint and A Pound, got rid of the fluorescents and installed daylight CFLs. They take a few minutes to warm up to full brightness,
but I wouldn't ever go back to fluorescents. Eventually I will change over to LEDs, right now they are very expense up front.
I did see that Hydro One has a 1500.00 lighting grant . I will check into that too. Thks for the ideas so far!
A guy in town had his done. They came in and changed the ballast and tubes. Same old fixtures.
I just installed four double tube 4 foot and two tandems they are T8's with reflectors and they are great. That is on one half/side of a 30X40 shop with white walls and it's plenty
bright in there.
A tandem is a 8 foot fixture that uses 4 foot tubes. So the tandems have four 4 foot tubes in them.

Fords Rule ! If it ain't designed and manufactured in North America it sucks ! I don't do rice, pasta, fish and chips, sauerkraut, Ikea or other third world motor vehicle !
Lighting is funny and a lot depends on the setup and ceiling hight . T 12s are getting harder to find and they are kicking the price up . if you can get the grant thats great If not and your somewhat happy with what you got stick in daylight tubes or full spectrum. whatever has the higher lumina and replace them with t8s or 5s as the ballasts burn out. . Just the bulb change will make a big difference . I haven't had any luck at all with the CFLs lasting any length of time any ware they get switched on and off on a regular basis .
Hydro did my shop last year. Tubes and ballasts $1.500 deal did almost all of them ,the ones in the back rooms I 'll do sometime. Huge difference in light. Ed
