Wiring Fuse Box & Ignition Switch
Permalink

I am trying to get my new Painless Fuse Box & Switch working. My biggest problem seems to be that the starter runs when it should not, as in when in the on position, start position etc.So when trying to hook up other items on the board the starter turns.

Sounds like you have hooked up a power wire to the solenoid instead of the wire which is only powered when you turn the key to start. Check the terminals on the back of the ignition switch. The wire to the starter solenoid should be SOL..........

should be a minor issue once you find the wire.

time to invest in a continuity tester and maybe a test light ,,,, and use them.
Figure out what all the connections are on the switch and go from there
I am 1/2 way on installing a American Autowire system and they have good drawings.
I can't imagine Painless being any different.
It's difficult to analyze your problem with out being there.
What are you working on??

Just my opinion,,,,

I use speedway wiring kits

Every wire is marked every foot

Example. Purple wire stater solinoid switch

And they have great drawings. Easy to follow

Cant imagine an expensive painless kit not being the same

I think davy might be right

Purple wire 919 should go to the neutral safety switch then to the starter solenoid . IF its a plug and play switch.

your right slim....neutral safety switch first...then starter solinoid....brain fart

Thanks for the replies. The Painless fuse box with written instructions but no drawings. I think they would have been helpful. Drawings are available on line however the ones I seen and discussed with their Tech guy are only for their wiring harnesses. My 31 Ford 302 have been on the road for years and I choose to go with the wires I had. Much of it was fairly new. Other than the engine harness , the rest is individual wires, no plugs.
I'll go out their and take a long look at the Solenoid & Neutral switches.

The Painless Ignition switch has a centre post that goes to the Solenoid switch Battery side. The other terminals are labelled Battery , Ignition and Accessory.

for a ford the centre post marked starter or   solenoid goes to the S terminal on the starter relay

the relay can be wired a few ways depending on the starter or year

Good diagrams, hope that helps..........My bet is still on the wire to the starter solenoid on the wrong terminal of the ignition switch...................Let us know how you make out.

Moved everything around with no luck. Time to step back and clean up some of the other wiring and go back at it later. Really missing something I'm sure. Thanks for the help.

To get power to the starter if its wired right it can only be the ignition switch or the solenoid . If your using the I terminal disconnect it for now. you should only have power at the S terminal when the key is in the start position. there should only be one wire on the start terminal on the key switch and that goes to the S terminal on the relay. you could have a bad switch but you need to check it with a meter OHMs or volts will tell the story. I said to disconnect the I terminal because there is a slight possibility of back feeding the relay or starter from the coil wire.

I got it running. I had a no Neutral Safety switch with my old shifter. I ran a momentary toggle switch, to replace it. When I started to rewire, I removed that switch and twisted the wires together. I did not consider this as an neutral Switch. Well, after reading your posts I went back and rewired the switch, as it was. It turned over when I flipped the switch, more or less like it should, but didn't run.
I put the wires to the Solenoid back as they were before I began the Painless Switch and Fuse box rewire,( 2 red wires on the 'S' terminal and a yellow to the started on the 'I' terminal), and it ran.

This doesn't agree with the drawings, but seems to work.

Thanks, your posts were helpful.

Electronic ignition.....?  would be the only reason to need 2 wires at the S terminal.

Yes, I do have a DuraSpark system, and your schematic looks close. I don't have some of the connectors that are shown.
Most of the wiring is made up running individual wires. Not sure what the TFI Coil is. I used an MSD Blaster coil.

You obviously know your stuff.

Thanks

TFI   thick film ignition fords equivalent to GM's HEI in reference to the coil I only think they mean a coil with the proper resistance for that system. Don't pat me on the back to hard Most of the things I remember come from making mistakes
