Well we are finally getting another one off our bucket list. Wife, 2 other couples and myself have been on Route 66 for about a week now. What a big beautiful country. Have met people from England, Germany, France, Australia, Finland and other states. Been to 3 or 4 car collections. Still lots of good sheet metal out here. Just leaving Santa Fe New Mexico today and Bob T, somebody wouldn't get within 50 ft of the Blue Whale...lol
GM Dad Glad the trip is going well. It is the best road trip I ever did. Need more pictures especially of the Blue Whale and the majority of your group enjoying the splendor and engineering marvel that it is. Have a great time. Bob
We did the route 66 from just below Chicago and ended at Santa Fey NM. Headed North then home. I always wonder how they drove trucks passed one another on that skinny road. Have a great and safe trip.
Did you through Amarillo? If so did you see the two yards on the south side. We stopped at the one East of Amarillo which is a private yard and had a visit with the fellow. A couple of years ago we stopped in and he had a HenyJ there.
First couple pics at Meramec Caverns rumored to be Jesse James hideout in the day.....Wagon Wheel motel were all separate little stone cabins and the 66 Outpost with world's largest chair. Neat souvenirs but you can get carried away in a hurry.
HI DON : GREAT NEWS on your trip ( I thought it was next month ) -- I wish you and Joannie All the Best on this trip ( and your anniversary ) -- Your postings are well received -- Keep them coming and ENJOY !!!!! -- LATER ---- DON / Fleet 51
Make sure you stop at Oatman Arizona, about 30 minutes west of Kingman Arizona on the Oatman Highway. When you come to a T intersection at Silver Creek road turn left. A great stop for lunch. Watch for burrows on the road. I did 66 in 67. Enjoy your trip and be safe.
First 2 pics are from Gary Turner place in Gay Parita...was a highly recommended guy to talk to for his knowledge but unfortunately he passed away in Jan this year. His wife showed us part of the collection it was pretty nice.
Next is the Boots Court in Carthage MO. Restoring the rooms back to the way they were in the 50's
Then Ray's Diner the next morning for breakfast and then most of the morning at Red Oak, the home of artist Lowell Davis......
Here is how the corner looked when we were there in 07. The building was condemned as an environment hazard because of asbestos so they had the area fenced off.
Thanks for the pictures and updates ..Doing 66 was on my bucket list for this year or next ..but things have changed over the last year and that trip may never happen for us.. I am enjoying your pictures and others comments ..Thank you for taking the time to post the pictures and explanations .. have a great safe trip ..
Coleman Theater built in the late 20s at a cost of about 750K...not much of a theater goer but pretty impressive place.
And of course the Rock Cafe. A lo of the research for the "Cars" movie was done here. Dawn tht owns the place and her business were a big part of the movie. Had an electrical fire back in 2008 area and pretty well gutted the place except for the stone walls. Had it reopened 1 year and 9 days later...
GM Dad... Looks like your having a great time. Finally a picture of the 'Blue Whale'. Hope the food at the Rock Resturant was better than when I ate there [ and cleaner too]. Keep the pictures coming.
...... Watch for burrows on the road. I did 66 in 67. Enjoy your trip and be safe.
I would think those Burrows are LONG gone! winkwink biggrin
I have been back to Oatman several times in the last 10 years, still lots of burrows. They were used in the gold mines to haul carts. The government shut the mines down in '42 as gold was not needed for the war effort. The burrows were released, now their offspring visit the town to get fed by the tourists.
Halfway mark and a compound with vintage iron locked up
Bernice and I stopped in and talked to the owner, a very nice guy. He has a guest book for visitors, quite a few from Canada. These are his projects and not for sale. He had people climbing over the fence and stealing parts so he reinforced the place.
Had a great trip. Just under 6500 miles and the 283 Malibu worked excellent. No car troubles except for a stretched fan belt which was replaced. 30 days in total. Met a lot of nice people, seen a lot of terrific scenery and a few car collections; got to stand in the Pacific ocean; attended a cruise night in Pomona, even got a little trophy for long distance; missed all the heavy rain storms and floods. It was a great way to celebrate our 40th anniversary and real glad we did it and stopped talking about doing it some day but it's pretty hard to beat the feeling you get when you pull back into your own driveway at home......
