Catalytic question

Hello everyone!

I am new to this site (or any other for that matter!) and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on something for me.

I just bought my first muscle car. It's been a long time coming! 1969 Chevelle SS (All indications are that it is a true SS).

The owner before the one I bought it from put in a new GM ZZ427 crate.

Question... I know the car was built without catalytic converters but does this car now have to be equipped with them because of the new motor? I have been reading that because this motor (size) was not available in the 69 Chevelle (other than the COPO ) it is now considered a Hot Rod and may need emissions that were never on the car before.

Please enlighten me...

Dave

Drive it like a rental. I wouldn't put them on unless some takes you to court and makes you do so.

If you want the letter of the law go here. http://www.ontario.ca/faq/do-hot-rods-need-drive-clean-test

*Any motor that was available for that model and model year (for example, it may have come as an option) would not be a different type and, therefore, not qualify as a hot rod

So its a 69 ss copo with a 1/2 henway .... I'm with Mike

For the extra 150.00 that 2 converters would cost it probably would be a good idea to put them on while building . It might save some headaches later on.

I'm with Mike too.... I would install the exhaust system with a straight section where you can install the cat's later if need be.

Thanks guys for all the replies and advice. I really had no interest in putting them on. I just wanted to know where I stood if/when I'm hassled by "The Man".

There was a Chevelle fan from I think London who replied yesterday. Somehow you got "wiped" off when I replied.

Who was you?

If it's a genuine 'Crate" engine & you have papers to 'prove" it No emissions required, if it's out of another vehicle, then you need all the 'crap' that came on that car!!!! Just had a visit here from a friend of mine & he got "pulled' over by MOE in Bowmanville Ont. recently in his 70 Monte Carlo, all stock other than carb. spent 40 min. while they checked out the Engine #'s etc. & visual check, then let him go PITA, waste of time, but they didn't care about holding him up!!!

Thanks dualquadpete.

I do have a copy of the GM dealer bill of sale from the previous owner (a few owners ago...) that put the engine in. I guess I should carry a copy of this with me? (Just in case?) Do you think this would help?

David, yep would be a good idea to carry it with you, + another copy to take to court if you do have a "bad" encounter with a MOE officer!!!! With these guys ,"your guilty" & up to you to prove "your not"!!!!!!
