My son and I have built a few cars over the years including an Olds Omega and a 1966 VW Bug. Currently we're working on a 1952 Mercury truck as a rat rod project. My son is a qualified welder and I'm a jack of all trades. My handle is Roboticist because I work with robotics for a living. I'm also a Ham Radio operator so you can bet my rig will have a 2m radio in it.
My son gave me the truck cab for Christmas, so now we're planning the rest of this budget build. I have the cab with hood and doors, and a pair of 1928 car fenders that we're going to use to put the body together. Should look pretty cool when we're done. I'm going to look for an F150 frame to put it on with inline 6 and automatic. We want to build this over a few years and spend hundreds, not thousands if we can help it.
To me a Rat Rod does not have to be an unsafe ride with holes everywhere. It will be solid with fully welded panels and all necessary equipment to be legal. It's just going to look like a rat with a dark blue Tremclad paint job done with a 4" fence brush. No expense spared! ;)
Feel free to give me a shout if you have any suggestions for getting this thing on the road.
Thanks a bunch!

Well, there's a story to the paint thing. My first car was an 83 Chev Citation. I had to paint it quick, so a few hours with a 1" brush in the July sun did the trick. Dark royal blue. Looked great from 50 feet away.
I will be going for a similar look and let it patina a bit naturally.

Yes, I get to Canal Days too. Right now my project is just a collection of parts. I'll post pics when I get something worth looking at. Rebuilding the door mechanisms right now and trying to read a faint VIN code (See other thread) before we dive in. Also need a frame to build from but waiting on the government for money owed me (Not holding my breath).
Thanks for the welcome!
