Three people have been killed in a crash on Highway 407 near Mississauga Road, Peel paramedics say.
All of the victims were pronounced dead on the scene.
The collision between a vintage car and a motor coach occurred at around 3 p.m. in Brampton.
OPP Sgt. Vincent Idzenga told reporters that a 1948 Chevrolet was travelling westbound in the far-right lane and "sustained a tire issue ... to the right rear tire and as a result of this mechanical issue the vehicle lost control" and swerved into the inner left lane.
The coach bus then "T-boned" the Chevrolet, and "as a result of that impact the [Chevrolet] burst into flames," Idzenga said, adding the car veered into the right ditch and rolled.
Two passersby vehicles stopped to help and managed pull two adult males from the car. Police did not disclose any information about the third victim.
The coach bus was carrying 49 passengers in addition to the driver, and sustained only "minor front-end damage," according to the OPP. No other vehicles were involved and "there were no indications of any speed issues or any other factors."
The collision kept all westbound lanes of Highway 407 closed from Mavis Road to Mississauga Road through much of the afternoon and evening; the road reopened just after 9 p.m.
CBC contacted me for my thoughts on the crash yesterday. I was not impressed with the questions so watch what you say. The next thing we may here is old cars should be off the road or inspected yearly something to that effect.

I fully agree but from safety's to what extreme are they going to go. There are groups out there that do not want you on the road and waiting for a reason to happen.

The major vintage car clubs in Ontario such as HASK, ACCCC and Ford V8 clubs to name a few already do a touring inspection each spring. All the clubs recognise each others checks by a dated sticker on the windshield to join in their events. I know the boys in blue dropped in a couple of years ago on ACCCC on their check day and watched. AACA is the only major vintage club that does not do it I believe. They never call it a safety inspection because of confusion with the DOT inspection.

Burnout competition? Engine blow competition? Where is this, Alabama? What a bunch of yahoos.
No here in Ontario. But the one I watched the car had a J hock from his axle to a dead weight while burning his tires. There is also Noons on 35/115 who has a show and burnout pad lined with a concrete barrier. I watched a guy on a bike put his front wheel against a barrier last year and break his fork off trying to do a burnout.

If I had an older rod , which I don't , I'd be getting it inspected every year on my own .....nothing wrong with having a professional eyeballing things , especially underneath .

No you wouldn't !! Neither would I or anyone else here. If the vehicle in your avatar is yours, do you get that inspected every year ?? Let's face it, most if not all "hot rods" are certified by people we know that hold a license that permits them to do so. There's no way a mechanic would risk his license certifying a MODIFIED vehicle for a stranger no matter how safe the car was built. As soon as something is modified, it opens a can of worms for all involved. What needs to be done is we, as a community need to make others aware if their vehicles are unsafe. The problem with these forums is that anytime someone mentions a flaw in their vehicle, the person gets upset and starts crying the blues.
What we need here is less "politically correct" responses like, "Hey, great Job !!", or " Looks great". What we need is more honest opinions like "Maybe you shouldn't use that 120v MIG to weld your frame together !". I would rather hurt someones ego than have them go out and hurt an innocent bystander because I didn't say anything.
Good reading, and I'm sure it will make quite a few reading this uneasy. I think about this every time I see a drastically modified vehicle drive by. I always ask myself, how the hell they they get this past safety, and how did they ever get insurance? Surely they must lie to the insurance company. Just recently, I saw a Chevelle drive by with a huge blower sticking out of the hood, pro street tires and a roll cage. Even specialty insurance companies wont touch these (Hagerty for example). Don't even get me started on Rat Rods !! IMO, they are the worst thing to ever happen to our hobby, and this genre, I believe is what started to raise eyebrows against all of us.

Thanks for keeping the hijack going !! Absolutely this is a somber thread, but at least it got conversation going about a subject that could affect us all. Who knows, even if it motivated one person to check something simple like the date code on their tires, it may have prevented another incident. Your reply is exactly the problem with these forums, there's always gonna be someone complaining about one thing or another.
Do not apologise for a hijack as when I start a topic let see see where it goes. It may go sideways but who cares as a better topic may come out of it and keep this web alive and not dormant for 15 Hr. at a time.

A bus weight's some ware around 50,000 LBs Traveling at 110 to 120k/h ... given the same set of circumstances do you really think a new car just driven off the lot would fare any better. Its just a tragic event **** happens.
Well said Kent. This thread should be about compassion for the deceased, their family and friends not a misguided rant on the safety of vintage vehicles. To the deceased R.I.P. my prayers are for you and yours.
well I for one added a positive outlook at the beginning of this thread
having the chance to spend your last day with those you love doing something you love
that's a hell of a lot better than most of us get at the end
as for the 3 that have just been lost I'm sure they wouldn't want it to happen to someone else - figuring out what happened is how we help them to do that now
FYI, I was a friend of Dave, Karen and Chad, for about 30 years, we were all founding members of the Brampton Street Rods.You're right, they did spend all their time together at car shows, willing to help anyone at a moments notice, cars were their life. A tragic end to good people. May they RIP.
Condolences to the families involved. I am sure that everyone posting on this thread feels that way.
That said, I have seen reports of this crash on a few boards now, most of the threads have taken the same turn. It is something that people driving older cars think of all the time, I am sure.
