Safety issue on 07 2500HD Chev trucks

With the postings on the crash on 407 I thought I would add a potential issue that happened to me a couple of weeks age. We hooked up the 5th wheel to drop off at my buddy's place on Tuesday, to be hooked up the Wed when we were leaving for Syracuse.

So on Tuesday I got a trailer brake warning message and after dropping the trailer off I plugged in the trailer plug tester and had Bernice press on the brake but there was no feed to the trailer brakes. To my amazement there were no brake lights on the truck, WTF!!! I looked under the dash at the switch but what a maze of wires. I checked all the fuses but none were burnt.

I called the dealer and got the truck in and was told it was the trailer brake controller relay at the back. They had one in stock and it was replaced and lo and behold my brake lights work. What would happen if this relay went while driving on a major highway??

Thanks for sharing!  I kinda like the idea that we are all watching out for each other.

when I was a kid , we just barely made it home one thanks giving weekend

that was when the boat got pulled out of the lake every year and brought back home for the winter

everything was just fine and dandy ... till Dad stoped out front of the house and begain backing the boat & trailer back into the driveway

I , sitting in the back seat noted something A little odd about the trailer

I could see the right side trailer wheel.... and a couple of feet of axle sticking out past the fender

it towed fine until my father stopped , backed up and began to turn the trailer
then it wanted to come all apart

god only knows when the axle actually broke

Wow this is exciting stuff. Once many years ago when doing my annual safety inspection on one of my vintage vehicles I found a cotter key missing on a tie rod end that a licensed mechanic had repaired. What would have happened if I was travelling down the road at 100 mph and it came loose. I guess we will never know because I fixed it even though I don't have a mechanics license.
