just had some glass cut for my 47 Ford ragtop, windshield and vent windows. Port Perry auto glass and trim did them. They were not cheap, but still reasonable , BUT the did the BEST job I have ever had done , referring to the many I had cut at other places over the years !  The edges were all sanded smooth, and the exposed edge of the vent window was polished smooth !! Thank you Port Perry glass for such a professional job !!!!

Windshields are safety glass.

Maybe I misread. Yes, windshields are safety, but all side glass is tempered, at least in an old car. Anything else become shrapnel in the event of an accident. But, is the windshield safety glass?

Windshield glass is always AS1. It's laminated, 2 pieces of glass with a plastic layer in between. It cracks when smashed, the plastic holds it together. It can be used for side glass.
AS2 is tempered, typically used for side and back glass. It shatters upon impact. It can't be used for windshields.

Older cars had safety glass on the sides.
When did tempered glass arrive?

I don't know if it ever really arrived, but if you are looking to replace side windows in your car and it is flat glass, having it cut and tempered is the easiest and most economical way and it is safe.
